Saucon FBLA Students Making a Difference in Community

The members of Saucon Valley High School's chapter of Future Business Leaders of America have been busy with many community service-oriented projects.

Saucon Valley High School teacher and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) adviser Chad Shirk recently reported on some of the community service projects the student-members of the group have been busy participating in.

Shirk said Saucon's FBLA chapter currently has 105 paid members who are actively involved, which is about 13 percent of the school's entire student population.

He said 71 students will be participating in an upcoming regional FBLA competition, competing in 39 different business events against local schools.

In addition to Shirk, Kim Flueso is also a sponsor to the group.

They listed the following recent accomplishments by Saucon's chapter of FBLA as worthy of highlighting:

1. Students successfully ran and operated an Alex's Lemonade Stand in Hellertown that raised $1,533, which was donated specifically for leukemia research (in honor of 16-year-old Saucon Valley student Angel Mojica, who lost his battle with the disease in July).

2. As part of Lower Saucon Township's Adopt-A-Road program, the SVHS FBLA has adopted Bingen Road. "We had 14 kids that spent their Saturday picking up trash/litter," Shirk said. "As we were cleaning up the road, we had people stop and applaud the students for giving back to the community."

3. The FBLA has 31 students assigned to organize and collect gifts for underprivileged families this season as part of a special Holiday Giveaway.
