Presidents Day: What's Open, Closed in Saucon Valley

Hellertown Borough offices - CLOSED* Lower Saucon Township offices - OPEN Saucon Valley School District - CLOSED United States Postal Service (USPS) - CLOSED. There is no mail delivery. Federal offices - CLOSED State offices - CLOSED Northampton County offices - CLOSED Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) stores - CLOSED Banks - Most will be CLOSED. Call your local branch for confirmation of hours. Retail stores - Most will be OPEN. *The regularly scheduled Hellertown Borough Council meeting will not be held on Presidents Day. Instead, it will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7pm.

A Snowy Presidents Day in the Saucon Valley

Saucon Valley residents woke up to a re-whitened world today. Overnight, Mother Nature delivered a couple of inches of white stuff to the area, freshening up dirty, dingy snow piles that just days ago were melting in 65 degree heat. Last night's snowfall may have been a prelude to more snow, which is possible this evening and tonight according to the National Weather Service. Another inch or so may fall, according to the latest forecast.

Family Trip to Mount Vernon: Priceless

In the process, a family discovers how lucky this country was to be led by George Washington.

By Kathleen Parrish My favorite photo from a recent family trip to Mount Vernon is of my two teenage children standing in the basement of George Washington’s home, the inspiration for a pivotal scene in the movie, “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.” It was among these white brick catacombs that actor Nicholas Cage’s character kidnaps the president and opens a secret passageway that wends beneath the Potomac River. That part is pure Hollywood. There are no hidden tunnels, but there is a rule against photography--a rule my husband claims he didn’t know about, even though our tour guide announced it in clipped tones as we descended the rickety stairs to the dim cellar.
