If you see an arctic loon stranded in your area, it may need to be taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center for treatment of its injuries.
Four Arctic Loons became stranded and injured when they landed on solid surfaces they thought were water across the Lehigh Valley in recent days. Animal lovers are warned to watch out for the birds over the next two weeks. The loons can't walk and may need human help if they crash land in our area during their migration from the Arctic Circle to the beaches of Virginia and Maryland. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. September-November (check website for other months) Cost: Website: hawkmountain.org Summary: Hawk Mountain is a 2,600-acre wildlife sanctuary open year round with eight miles of trails for superb hiking in any season. It's one of the best places in North America to view the annual autumn hawk migration and was recently named one of the top 10 places to watch raptors by Audubon magazine. Hawk Mountain's website offers daily updates of wildlife sightings. The sanctuary includes a visitors center and bookshop, as well as a native plant garden.

One thing you should know is that they're really, really boney.
A type of herring that has long been fished locally, shad are spawned in freshwater, but spend most of their lives in the saltwater of the ocean. The 'shad run' is the 6 to 8 week period, usually in April or May, when the shad return to the Delaware River to spawn. When they run, the fish may be as long as 30 inches, and the average shad weighs 6 to 8 pounds. When the shad are running, "(they) don't eat. They react," said shad fisherman Ted Strzepek, of Harmony Township, N.J. Strzepek added that shad are aggressive when breeding season hits, and are more interested in fighting anything that gets in the way of their upstream swim. Haha I wouldn't believe it either if I heard it. Good point. Luckily that is why news sources like the patch are creating awareness and educating the public at the same time.
