Tell Us: Does Hellertown Have a 'Deer Problem?'

Oh deer! A Patch reader says deer roaming borough streets could hurt themselves or residents.

Have you ever seen a deer in Hellertown? If you have, did it concern you? Patch reader Robin Hudak Kelchner says she has seen deer in town, and she shared her concerns in an Oct. 24 post on Hellertown Patch's Facebook page. "(I) took my 7 month old son and boxer for a walk...and 4 deer were standing on Miller street, right off Easton Road. Last week my husband and I saw them on Third Avenue," Kelchner said. "Quite a shock when you're out on a stroll and you come upon them here in town." She said the animals are finding their way into town via the rail trail and through Silver Creek Country Club. "(I) hope for the safety of the deer and residents that no one gets hurt!" she added. Do you think deer in the borough are a public safety issue? …

Lower Saucon Brother - You are correct, I know nothing about the Game Commission's "deer management" program. I do know that where local farmers are concerned, red tags or otherwise, "deer management" isn't working. And you are also correct, we would probably have deer ticks even without deer, although various sources say the ticks favor deer for their hosts. And I imagine the little buggers aren…   more ›
