2-Hour Parking to Be Removed on Linden Avenue

On Feb. 19 Hellertown Borough Council approved a recommendation by Public Works Director Tom Henshaw that a two-hour parking zone be removed along Linden Avenue.

On Tuesday night, Hellertown Borough Council unanimously approved a motion that paves the way for the removal of a two-hour parking zone on Linden Avenue. Council approved the motion after borough Public Works Director Tom Henshaw reported that maintaining the currently restricted area "makes no sense at all." The restricted zone is in front of a private residence and where "the old Andy's Flower Shop was," Henshaw explained. Councilman Tom Rieger asked that Henshaw and public works employees take note of any other antiquated parking zones in the borough, so that they too may be considered for updating when council votes to formalize the Linden Avenue change with an amendment to its parking ordinance. At the meeting, Henshaw and the public…

Volunteer Defends Park Restroom's Cleanliness

Ann Henshaw told Borough Council Oct. 1 that various factors should be considered in judging the cleanliness of the public restroom in Dimmick Park.

In response to two borough members' criticism of the Dimmick Park women's restroom's cleanliness last month, a resident and volunteer spoke out at borough council's Oct. 1 meeting. Ann Henshaw is the wife of Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw, but she told council she had decided to address the criticism as both a resident and volunteer at events that are held in the park. On Sept. 17, Henshaw was told by council members Gail Nolf and Tom Rieger to pay more attention to the state of the restrooms, which are heavily used during youth football games. Nolf said the floors in the women's restroom have been so dirty that she's heard complaints from park visitors. She cited "skeletonized bugs" as a concern and asked that the floors be …

Bold had nothing to say? How surprising. Here is an idea: since the increased filth is due to heavier use during football season, the football organization should be responsible for cleanup. That would go for every organization that has permitted use of the park facilities.   more ›

Borough Yard Waste Pick-Up Will Begin Oct. 15

Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw announced Oct. 1 that his department's annual curbside fall yard waste pick-up will begin the week of Oct. 15.

Editor's Note: This story has been updated and corrected. An earlier published version indicated that leaf pick-up will begin Oct. 15. In fact, curbside yard waste pick-up will begin on that date. Leaf pick-up will begin later in the fall. We apologize for any confusion the error may have caused. Are you starting to gather fall yard waste around your home? If you are, you should know that the Hellertown Public Works Department will begin its annual curbside fall yard waste collection on Monday, Oct. 15. Public Works Director Tom Henshaw announced the start date for the collection at Hellertown Borough Council's Oct. 1 meeting. Yard waste pick-up this year will follow the same schedule as garbage pick-up, he said. Residents of Hellertown …

Councilwoman Requests Park Restroom Cleanup

Hellertown Borough councilwoman Gail Nolf told Public Works Director Tom Henshaw Sept. 17 that the floors at the women's restroom in Dimmick Park are "disgusting."

A Hellertown Borough Council member requested that special attention be given to the women's restroom at Dimmick Park Sept. 17. Councilwoman Gail Nolf told Public Works Director Tom Henshaw that the floors in the bathroom are "disgusting" and covered with "skeletonized bugs." Nolf said she's heard complaints about the facilities during youth football games at the park, although she said she's unsure about conditions in the men's room. The women's restroom "needs pressure-washing," she told Henshaw. "Somebody has to go in and clean the floor."  Henshaw responded to the concern by telling Nolf that he already checks the women's restroom on a daily basis, and that it's cleaned regularly. When he said he didn't think he could pressure-wash the…

Councilman Questions Labor Day Weekend Road Closure

Hellertown Borough Councilman Tom Rieger asked Public Works Director Tom Henshaw why a section of Chestnut Street that was recently repaved was closed throughout the holiday weekend.

A road's closure during the long Labor Day weekend prompted Hellertown Borough Councilman Tom Rieger to question Public Works Director Tom Henshaw about his department's planning practices. At council's Sept. 4 meeting, Rieger noted that a section of Chestnut Street--between Main Street and Easton Road--had remained closed following its recent repaving. The lengthy closure inconvenienced residents, he contended. Rieger questioned whether the closure over the holiday weekend could have been avoided with better planning. Henshaw, however, said poor weather was to blame for the scheduling snafu. Pointing skyward, he told Rieger, "You have to talk to Him." "We had no control over it," he said of the closure, adding that "the option was to …

Council Approves Purchase of New Garbage Truck

On July 16, Hellertown Borough Council unanimously approved a motion to purchase a new garbage truck, Money for the purchase had previously been budgeted.

The days of frantic phone calls to other municipalities for emergency help with garbage pickup will hopefully be a thing of the past in Hellertown, following Borough Council's unanimous July 16 decision to approve the purchase of a new sanitation truck for the Public Works Department. Council president Phil Weber said the money for the purchase had previously been budgeted, so the motion to approve it was essentially a formality. The decision, however, may have taken on greater urgency, in light of the recent "borough garbage crisis of 2012," when both of the borough's trucks suffered mechanical failures and became inoperable at the same time. In that situation, the City of Bethlehem agreed to loan its Parks Department sanitation truck to …

Splash Pad Bacteria Issue Dealt With 'Immediately'

Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told Borough Council July 2 that an excessive bacteria count at the pool's splash pad was successfully dealt with within a day.

In addition to being briefly closed after it was found to be too slippery when it first opened last month, the Hellertown Pool's new splash pad recently had to be temporarily closed after a reading indicated that bacteria levels were too high. Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told Borough Council July 2 that the problem was "dealt with...immediately" after it was discovered. He said chlorine levels were boosted and the splash pad's filtration system was backwashed in order to eliminate the bacteria. "We retested a day later and the bacteria was gone," Henshaw said, adding that subsequent tests yielded the same result. He theorized that excessive rainfall may have contributed to the problem, which he said is not unusual at splash pads, …

Bethlehem Helps Pick Up Hellertown's Garbage

On July 2, Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw thanked the City of Bethlehem for sending a truck to help complete a route while both of the borough's trucks were out of service.

Although the Borough of Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township are often known for their symbiotic relationship, it was the City of Bethlehem that stepped up to help the borough's Public Works Department when it recently faced a mini-crisis, Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told Borough Council July 2. Henshaw said the unusual crisis occurred when both of the department's garbage trucks went down at the same time. One of the two trucks--which is newer--developed transmission problems, while the other truck developed an air leak while dropping off garbage at IESI Bethlehem Landfill. With both trucks out of service simultaneously, Henshaw, Borough Manager Cathy Kichline and Assistant Borough Manager Tina Krasnansky sprang into action, calling…

Official on Pool: 'We've Been Having a Lot of Trouble'

Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told Borough Council July 2 that the Hellertown Pool has been plagued by everything from unruly children to thefts in recent weeks.

So far it's been a very hot summer, the Hellertown Pool has been packed day after day, and there have been more than a few incidents there that are a cause for concern, Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told Borough Council July 2. "We've been having a lot of trouble (at the pool)," Henshaw told council during his bimonthly report. One of the main problems has been absentee parents who consider the pool to be a kind of "daycare," he said, adding that many of these parents appear to be "out-of-towners." With pool attendance approaching 1,000 some days, there has also been a rash of thefts recently, Henshaw reported. In one case, a woman with $50 in her purse left the bag underneath a blanket for five minutes, only to return and find her …

This is a public pool that is maintained by local taxes. Very simple...if you do not pay taxes to the Borough of Hellertown you pay $20 a day to swim at the pool. Borough council needs to get a backbone. This is not an ethnic debate but a pure resident vs non resident issue. And no non-resident children under 15 are allowed with out an adult. The splash pad is unnecessary and a waste of money. …   more ›
