Thanks for the great article! The issue of community cats and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is incredibly important… not just for the feral cat population, but for all of us humans as well! For anyone looking for a way to teach children about these two issues, there’s a great new children’s book out called FAIRMINED FRAN AND THE THREE SMALL BLACK COMMUNITY CATS. The book tells the story of Fairminded …   more ›

Trap Neuter Return Program Coming to Hellertown

At their Feb. 4 meeting, Borough Council approved a recommendation by Borough Manager Cathy Kichline that a trap-neuter-return program be implemented in response to a rise in the number of feral cats in Hellertown.

Editor's Note: The following letter from No Nonsense Neutering was shared by the Borough of Hellertown on Thursday. It is also posted on the borough's website, as well as the borough's Facebook page. There is GOOD news for Hellertown Borough caretakers. The Borough of Hellertown understands the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program and will be offering to pay the FULL fee for FERAL cats to be fixed at No Nonsense Neutering (NNN) from the borough effective today (Feb. 7, 2013). There is address information which must be completed at admission. A rabies shot is always included and left ear-tip required. For borough residents who have inside-outside cats: Your free-roaming cat should be microchipped or wear a break-away collar. If an un-neutered…

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Shelter to End Municipal Animal Control Contracts

The Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township says a change in its policy "merely reflects the reality of our current status." Lower Saucon Township currently has a contract with the center.

To the editor: The Center for Animal Health and Welfare will remain a viable shelter for stray and ownerless companion animals in Northampton County. However, in an effort to contain spiraling costs and address the issue of increasing numbers of stray animals in Northampton County, the Center has decided to modify its municipal animal control contract. Starting on Jan. 1, 2013, we will no longer be accepting municipal animal control contracts and will no longer be an “open” shelter. Instead, the Center will treat animals from all sources in a manner similar to a private relinquishment. The standard fee for drop-off will be $150 per animal, payable at the time of relinquishment. Most importantly, animals will only be accepted on a space-…

Chief Asks Residents Not to Feed Stray Cats

Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp said stray cats in the borough of Hellertown should not be fed, even by well-meaning residents.

If a cute kitty cat comes crying at the back doorstep, it may be tempting for some residents to put out a bowl of milk or a dish filled with cat food for the stray feline. However, Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp said June 4 that borough residents should resist the temptation to feed strays. Over the past few years the number of stray cats in the borough has appeared to decline, and the population will remain small if residents avoid leaving treats outside, which only encourages more strays to move into the area, Shupp said. A few stray cats have been spotted recently in the vicinity of the Hellertown Post Office, it was noted. One of those cats is currently being cared by a local resident who described the stray as "beautiful." She …

Pets in Need of Homes: Bulbasaur and Haze

These adorable pets from the Center for Animal Health and Welfare in Williams Township need new homes.

Pet profiles are provided on a weekly basis by the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, 1165 Island Park Road, Easton, PA 18042. Visit the center's website or call 610-252-7722 for more information about adopting a shelter pet. BULBASAUR Bulbasaur, an adult Lhasa Apso, was abandoned. He was left tied to the bench at the center's front door overnight. He is cute (and shaved) now, but was dirty and matted when he arrived. He will be getting neutered and having a dental exam soon. He is looking for a caring forever home. HAZE Haze is a 1-year-old domestic shorthair with black and white markings. She was found as a stray on Main Street in Hellertown. She is cute, friendly, weighs 11 pounds and is in need of a loving home.
