Letters to the Editor

Letter: Local Reaction to Storm Inspires Pride

Carol Schneider says many local residents benefited from the kindness and quick-thinking of the Saucon Valley School District's administration and staff during the recent power outages.

To the Editor: I would like to thank Dr. Sandra Fellin and Wally Zimpfer, both from Saucon Valley School District. These two people were quick to get a handle on the needs of the residents within the school district by putting together a warming station/shelter for those affected (by the power outages). A fellow co-worker and I volunteered on Saturday night at the SVSD shelter/warming station and we saw firsthand how residents of the school district (Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown Borough) benefited from their kindness.  As Dr. Fellin stated to me, “it takes a team,” and she is absolutely correct. I would also like to thank Giant in Hellertown, the Hellertown Diner and the many residents who donated food to the shelter and all the …

Middle School Shelter Closing

The Saucon Valley Middle School will close as a storm shelter Sunday night at 9pm.

Saucon Valley School District superintendent Dr. Sandra Fellin announced Sunday morning that the middle school shelter that opened Thursday will close Sunday evening at 9pm. The school first opened last week as a warming center and a place for local residents to take hot showers and charge electronics. As the power outages caused by Superstorm Sandy stretched beyond Thursday, and temperatures dropped, the school was opened on a 24-hour basis so residents without heat could have a warm place to sleep. Today, "everyone is welcome for one last hot shower or to power up their devices," Fellin said Sunday. She also issued a "heartfelt thank you" to the volunteers who helped staff the shelter on a 24-hour basis, including teachers, custodians …

Attend Saturday's Football Game for Free

All admission fees for Saturday's Saucon Valley football game will be waived as a way to help rally community spirit in the wake of the power outages caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Editor's Note: This article has been updated with additional information about the game. The Saucon Valley School District hopes that Saturday's home football game against rival Palisades will be an opportunity for the community to rally in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the widespread power outages that have affected many Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township residents. With that in mind, Saucon Valley Athletic Director Bob Frey announced Friday afternoon that all admission fees will be waived in order to encourage attendance and get residents out of their homes--which in some cases remain cold and dark more than four days after the storm struck. As of Friday thousands of borough and township residents were still without power, according…

Middle School Shelter to Stay Open Until Sunday

Saucon Valley Middle School will continue to serve as a shelter for storm-weary local residents who lost power during Superstorm Sandy. The Saucon Valley Compost Center will also open for extended hours. Volunteers are needed at both locations.

A day after opening the Saucon Valley Middle School gym as a temporary shelter for local residents dealing with a days-long power outage, Saucon Valley School District superintendent Dr. Sandra Fellin announced that the school will remain open as a shelter until Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9pm. The school's locker rooms and showers are also open during the daytime for the thousands of local residents who have been without power since Superstorm Sandy brought down trees and utility lines Monday night. Fellin said Thursday that falling temperatures and the number of local residents still without heat prompted the decision to open part of the school as a shelter. Friday night's low is forecast to be 36 degrees, and the low Saturday night is forecast to…

School District Gym Opening as Shelter

The Saucon Valley Middle School gym will serve as a shelter for local residents who are without power.

UPDATES: Saucon Valley schools will remain closed on Friday, Nov. 2. The Saucon Valley football game scheduled for 1pm Saturday will instead begin at 2pm. The Saucon Valley School District announced this afternoon that its middle school will remain open tonight as a shelter for local residents. The school has been open during the daytime for residents to take hot showers and charge electronic devices. Thousands of Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township residents are still without power in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which blew threw the area with high winds earlier this week. School district superintendent Dr. Sandra Fellin said dropping temperatures prompted the decision to keep the middle school open during the overnight hours tonight. "…

I spoke too soon when I updated this story earlier tonight with an announcement about free admission to Saturday's football game. So I've removed that information and I apologize for any inconvenience. I hope everyone will want to attend the game regardless.   more ›

New Emergency Generator Installed at Dewey Fire Co.

Hellertown Borough Council Vice President John Bate announced the installation of the new generator at council's Sept. 4 meeting.

The rare October snowstorm that last fall darkened parts of the Saucon Valley for days prompted local officials to re-evaluate their contingency plans for future natural disasters. In concert with that re-evaluation, officials decided to install a more powerful emergency generator at the Dewey Fire Company in Hellertown. The generator that had been installed at Dewey was not of a sufficient size to power the building's furnace, which limited its usefulness as a shelter in the wake of the October storm. At Hellertown Borough Council's Sept. 4 meeting, council vice president John Bate announced that a new generator--which is powerful enough to fully electrify and heat the fire station--is now nearly operational. Bate is also the captain of …
