A New Jersey man on parole for sexual assault who allegedly urinated on a wall at the Hellertown 7-Eleven and then drove under the influence of alcohol waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Northampton County Court, according to Hellertown Police. Stephen S. Soultanian, of Drums, Luzerne County, sexually assaulted two teenage girls during a June sleepover, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday by Lower Saucon Township Police.
A 48-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting two teenage girls in Lower Saucon Township and telling an adult female who heard what he was doing, “It was the cat,” court records say. Stephen S. Soultanian of Drums, Luzerne County, was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with two incidents--the alleged sexual assault in June and a harassment complaint in October involving the woman at the same Lower Saucon address. A criminal complaint filed by Lower Saucon Cpl. Christopher Leidy alleges that Soultanian assaulted the two girls at a sleepover at their friend’s house. One of the girls told Leidy she was sleeping on a couch “like an angel” when she was awakened by something touching her. She said the touching "hurt," and then she …

Although he admitted in July to molesting a girl under the age of 13, former Hellertown resident Richard Edward Novack, 46, withdrew his guilty plea Thursday, angering Northampton County Judge Paula Roscioli and frustrating Assistant District Attorney Laura Mammana Kash, a story published by the Express-Times indicates. Novack--who now lives in Frenchtown, New Jersey--had accepted a plea deal that would not have required his registration as a sex offender under Megan's Law and was scheduled to be sentenced this week, but he reportedly told the court Thursday that he's had a change of heart about the deal because he is innocent of the charges. Novack's alleged victim will now be forced to testify at the trial, which could begin as early as …

Conference at Lehigh University tackles dangers to students
Like death and taxes, binge drinking on college campuses might appear to be inevitable – the product of large swaths of young people free for the first time from parental control. But a group of experts gathered at Lehigh University recently argued that there are ways to reduce its prevalence in addition to preventing crimes such as sexual assault, that often involve alcohol. The conference was a joint venture between Lehigh University and Security On Campus, an advocacy organization founded by Connie and Howard Clery after their daughter Jeanne was raped and murdered at Lehigh 25 years ago. The Clerys lobbied state legislatures and Congress to pass more than 35 laws on campus safety, including the federal Jeanne Clery Act, which requires …

A Bethlehem man allegedly raped a boy from Lower Saucon Township at least 50 times between 2001 and 2006, when the child was between the ages of 3 and 8, according to stories published Thursday on both the Morning Call and the Express-Times websites. Vincent J. Arnold, 21, of the 100 block of Saucon View Drive, allegedly threatened the boy at knifepoint and forced him to perform sex acts at a home on Rosalie Drive in the township, according to the Express-Times story.
