Free Forum on Aging to Be Held

The Upper Bucks Forum on Aging will be held Wednesday, May 8 in Richlandtown.

A free forum on aging featuring information about senior services and resources in the area will be held Wednesday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (doors open at 9 a.m.) at Benner Hall, 1260 Cherry St., Richlandtown. The Upper Bucks Forum on Aging is for individuals 55 and older, according to a flyer. Sponsored by the Phoebe Institute on Aging and numerous local municipalities, including the Borough of Hellertown, the forum will include a complimentary lunch. Anyone who plans to attend should RSVP by calling 267-371-4566 to ensure adequate seating.

AAA Lists Best Cars for Senior Citizens

New study by AAA shows most older drivers have a car that's not the best for them

With nearly 90 percent of motorists 65 and older suffering from health issues that affect driving safety, finding a car that not only adapts to conditions, such as lack of flexibility or muscle strength, while maintaining safety and comfort can be difficult.   Data from a new AAA survey also reveals that only one in 10 senior drivers with aging health issues are driving a vehicle that has features like keyless entry and larger dashboard controls that can assist with such conditions. To better equip the “silver tsunami” for driving safety and comfort, AAA has updated its Smart Features for Older Drivers resource to address a broader range of health conditions and include new data on 2012 vehicle features.  As a leading advocate for senior …

Free Turkey Dinner to Be Held for Local Seniors

On Saturday, Nov. 24 the Saucon Valley Jaycees will host their annual Thanksgiving dinner for senior citizens who live in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township.

Are you a senior who lives in Hellertown or Lower Saucon Township? Do you know someone who is? If you answered 'yes,' consider marking your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 24 at 12:30pm. That's when the Saucon Valley Jaycees will host their annual Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner at the Dewey Fire Company Social Hall, 502 Durham St., Hellertown. The doors for the dinner will open at noon. Seating at the dinner is limited to 150 seniors. To reserve a seat by Nov. 20, call 610-730-2089 and leave a message.

PA Seeks to Tighten Medicaid-Related Financial Services

Pennsylvania's Department of Public Welfare is seeking to get in line with most states that have one or a few entities which provide financial management services to Medicaid recipients.

By Stacy Brown | PA Independent If a Medicaid recipient needs help with tax preparation, the state Department of Public Welfare directs him to an organization that specializes in income taxes. Or, when a caregiver gets sick and can no longer provide services, the Medicaid recipient is directed to the organization that handles financing for caregivers.  The Department of Public Welfare, or DPW, has 37 such organizations that offer financial management services, but that number could be cut to as few as three as early as April. The financial management services, which are used by about 22,000 mostly disabled and elderly recipients, allow Medicaid enrollees to direct their benefits to a company, which manages their financial, payroll, tax …

Taxpayers Will Cover Costs of Photo IDs for Voters Under Proposed Change

Democrats, including Rep. Steve Samuelson of Northampton County, argue the new rules will disenfranchise voters.

An effort to fight voting fraud could cost state taxpayers millions, though it’s a price some lawmakers are willing to pay. New requirements intended to cut down on fraudulent voters were passed by the House State Government Committee on May 9 and will head to the House for a final vote. The bill would require voters to show official photo identification each time they go to their polling place to cast a ballot. Voters now have to provide identification only the first time they vote at a specific polling place. The new requirement would not take effect until the primary elections in the spring of 2012, unless there is a special election scheduled for earlier in 2012.
