Resident Complains to Council About Neighbor's Property

Barry Yonney, of the 1200 block of Second Avenue, told Hellertown Borough Council Sept. 4 that a home across the street from his is currently an eyesore.

On Sept. 4, a resident of Second Avenue asked members of Hellertown Borough Council and borough staff if anything can be done about a property across the street from his home. Barry Yonney, of 1226 Second Ave., said the poor condition of the property at 1231 Second Ave. is causing his home's value to depreciate. Northampton County property records indicate the property is owned by Rosario Velas, and a public online database indicates that it is the home of Michele I. and Gwen P. Velas Sr. Yonney told council that the grass isn't being cut, and that lawnmowers and other pieces of equipment are strewn about the home. "Now you've got two cars sitting out back," he said. "I have had it. That is totally laziness, what they're doing there." …

Police: Street Sign Removed, Replaced With Other Sign

Someone took a West Clarke Street sign and replaced it with a Rohn Road sign, Hellertown Police announced Monday.

Two people in the Hellertown area apparently prefer Rohn Road to West Clarke Street, and they want others to know that. In a press release issued Monday, borough police said they are investigating the theft of a West Clarke Street sign that was located at the intersection of Second Avenue. Their investigation began when they were called to the intersection Aug. 9 at 12:20am for a report of "two people doing something to the street sign," police said. Why the sign was replaced with a Rohn Road sign is apparently anyone's guess. And why a West Clarke Street sign was installed at Second Avenue, which intersects with East Clarke Street according to most maps, is also a mystery. Police said the missing sign is green with white lettering that …

Hellertown police say they arrested borough residents Kristina Arnold, 18, and Philip Duffy, 21, after officers were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Second Avenue for an "intoxicated female emergency medical call" on Aug. 6.

Hellertown police say a phone call about an intoxicated female having a medical emergency led to the arrest of two borough residents Aug. 6. According to police, officers were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Second Avenue at 10:16pm, in response to the call. At that time, police were "obstructed from approaching the home to aid the (intoxicated) female by a male later identified as Philip Duffy, who was at that point taken into custody," police said in a press release. After Duffy was arrested, police say other occupants of the home said the female who needed aid had fled the residence and was running north on Main Street.
