The federal government should ban the purchase or possession of all military-type weapons including, but not limited to, automatic rifles and automatic handguns.
The gun massacre that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut was peculiarly an American catastrophe, happening in an almost ideal American town, to 20 children (and six adults). There have been seven such incidents since the beginning of the year. Our national sorrow and outrage is quite justified. At the same time, although our hearts are still in Newtown, our heads must be on what we can do to prevent another mass murder in the United States. It is a fact that the number of guns we Americans own per capita is the greatest in the world and almost twice that of our nearest competitor (Serbia). These numbers are as of 2007, but it is certain that our per capita rate has grown since then. Indeed, I have seen one estimate that suggests that our …
Lisa Fiore is asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School as a way to let them know people are thinking about them.
An Emmaus mom is urging her family and friends to grab their crayons and some construction paper and show their support for the Connecticut elementary school where last week a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage, killing 20 children and six adults. Lisa Fiore has been asking everyone she knows to create artwork for the children and families of Sandy Hook Elementary School to let them know that people all over the country are “thinking about them and holding them in healing thoughts.” And now, Fiore, mom to a second-grader at Shoemaker Elementary School, is asking the Emmaus Patch community to join the effort. “The children and families of this community are forever changed. I would love to show support to the school from towns all over …

Patch is among the many websites that will display a tribute to victims of the Sandy Hook shooting across their sites tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 21 at 9:30am. According to Patch's sister site Techcrunch, the online campaign was inspired by a call for a moment of silence by Connecticut’s governor--and follows a coalition of tech leaders calling for more gun control. Techcrunch writes: The awareness strategy seems inspired by the SOPA [Stop Online Piracy Act] website blackouts from January. Instead of completely blocking functionality of participating websites, though, the tribute message can be closed to resume normal browsing. Alternatively, people can click a link in the message to find out what else they can do to aid the campaign. The …

Dear Newtown, Connecticut, I don’t know you. I’ve never been to your town, I don’t know your friends and families and streets and memories. Like most people, I didn’t know you existed until today, and now my ears keep echoing with your name and your cries; now I close my eyes and picture your woods; now I think of you every time I inhale, exhale, breathe. I don’t know you, but my heart shattered for you today in a way I can’t comprehend yet. I don’t have answers for you, only shared questions; I don’t have reasons for you, only resonating whys. I’m not there, I’m not with you, I’m not part of you tonight, but from 317 miles away, know that I am grieving with you. I don’t have the intellect to understand what happened today. I don’t have …
Officers from six Northampton County police departments participated in 'Active Shooter' training on July 26 to prepare for the unthinkable, like the horrific act of violence inside Sandy Hook Elementary School.
An "active shooter" drill in Northampton County helped police, school officials and emergency crews practice their response to a rampage like Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Nazareth Area Intermediate School was the scene of multiple -- staged -- tragedies July 26 during specialized training co-hosted by the Upper Nazareth Township Police Department and National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA). About 20 police officers from six Northampton County departments participated in the “Active Shooter” training that Don Alwes, an instructor with NTOA, described as “kind of like a scrimmage.” The 10-hour day included a historical overview of active shooter situations and field training exercises, during…

Mary Sherlach, the mother-in-law of Patch writer Eric Schwartz, was among 27 people killed in the second-deadliest school shooting in American history.
The deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, claimed the life of a Patch writer's family member. Mary Sherlach, the school's psychologist, was among 26 people, including 20 children, who died when a gunman opened fire at the school Friday morning. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also died in the rampage. Sherlach was the mother-in-law of Deptford resident Eric Schwartz, a longtime Patch freelancer who covers high school sports in South Jersey. Sherlach, 56, lived in Trumbull, CT. Schwartz and his wife, Maura, arrived in Connecticut on Friday evening to be with their family. They could not be reached for comment. In the shooting spree, Lanza also reportedly killed his mother, who was a teacher …

Wow, stumbled on this. Pretty yellow journalism. Is this how you drive a community conversation? I live in Sandy Hook, and I'm either a paid crisis actor or a very sad person who has friends and neighbors with empty beds. I'm pretty offended.   more ›
