Panthers Down Warriors in 9 Innings

The Saucon Valley Panthers (6-12) defeated the Wilson Warriors (6-10) on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Saucon Valley dealt Wilson's chances to make it to the post-season a blow when Ryan Kern singled on the first pitch to drive in the winning run with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The winning rally began as Joe Schuyler beat out a slow roller to second. Gabe Sinko's bunt was fielded by Wilson pitcher Nick Smith, but his throw to second could not be handled, putting runners on first and second. As Stephen Gahman prepared to bunt the runners to second and third, a wild pitch did the job. Gahman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting the stage for Kern's game-winning hit. Lefty Matt Laub picked up the 5-4 win. The Panthers are now 6-12, while the Warriors are 6-10.

Baseball Team's Car Wash to Be Held April 27

Proceeds from the car wash at Christ Lutheran Church, Hellertown, will benefit the Saucon Valley High School Baseball Team. Cars will be washed for $5 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Panthers Down Falcons in Track & Field

Saucon Valley edged Salisbury in the boys event, 76-73. The Panther girls downed the Falcons 86-61. Results from the Tuesday, April 9, meet are below.

Senior Spotlight on Ray O'Donnell III

With 150 career wins, Ray O'Donnell is the winningest wrestler in Saucon Valley High School history. He will attend Princeton University in the fall.

Saucon Valley senior Ray O'Donnell began wrestling as a first-grader, after his best friend encouraged him to come out for the team. "I loved it from that moment on," he recalled. In ninth grade, Ray won 18 of his first 21 matches, but finished with a record of 21-17. That second half "slump" (3-14), as well as not winning at the 2011 Fargo Free Style, were his greatest disappointments, he said. As a sophomore Ray placed second at Districts, third at Eastern Regionals and fourth at PIAA. In his junior year, Ray placed first at Districts, received the PIAA District XI AA 2012 Outstanding Wrestler Award and the Pinner Award, as he scored all his wins with pins (and in just 2:35).
