McDonald's Robbery Arrests, Feral Cat Plan Top Local News

Hellertown Police announced the filing of charges against two men in the 2010 armed robbery at McDonald's. In other news, a Trap-Neuter-Return program was introduced to deal with feral cat colonies.

Hellertown Police announced that DNA recovered from a discarded ski mask has allegedly been linked to Rodney Amos Chery, 24, who has been charged in the 2010 armed robbery of the McDonald's restaurant on Main Street. The Borough of Hellertown has partnered with No Nonsense Neutering to bring a 'Trap-Neuter-Return' program to neighborhoods where feral cat colonies are causing problems. A proposal to improve security in Saucon Valley schools by requiring visitors to leave their car keys at school offices when they signing in drew reader reaction. An Upper Black Eddy man was drunk Feb. 21 when he punched the window out of another man's car and hid in a tub inside an apartment at 1999 Leithsville Road, Lower Saucon Township Police said. DNA From Ski Mask Links Man to 2010 Armed Robbery: Police

Police say DNA recovered from a discarded ski mask has been linked to Rodney Amos Chery, 24, who is charged in the 2010 armed robbery of a McDonald's restaurant.

Note: This article has been updated and corrected. An earlier published version gave Rodney Amos Chery's age as 22, but records indicate he is 24 years old. More than two years after it occurred, Hellertown Police say the brazen early morning armed robbery of the borough's McDonald's has been solved. In a press release Monday, police said forensic analysis by Pennsylvania State Police of a black ski mask that was found after the robbery yielded a DNA sample from saliva. The DNA was subsequently matched to that of Rodney Amos Chery, 24, no address provided, who has admitted to robbing the restaurant, police said. Police said a search warrant was later executed and a DNA sample obtained directly from Chery to confirm the match. After the …

Where to Get Free Java for National Coffee Day 2012

Get your caffeine on and celebrate with a free cup of coffee.

If the first words out of your mouth every morning are, “I’ll have a large coffee”—or if you can’t even speak until after you’ve had your java fix—there's a national holiday created especially for you. America will put staunch tea drinkers to shame on National Coffee Day Sept. 29, when coffee fiends can rejoice and celebrate their beloved coffee bean with free brew from national chains. Coffee was first brought to America in the mid-1600s in a shipment en route to “New Amsterdam,” now known as New York, according to the National Coffee Association. We have that shipment and the Boston Tea Party to thank for turning the nation into coffee drinkers.   Some national chains will be giving out free cups of coffee during the week of Sept. 23.   …

Apple Slices Sold at McDonald's Recalled

A New Jersey Company is recalling almost 300,000 cases of packaged products that contain sliced and diced apples.

Missa Bay, LLC is voluntarily recalling a total of 293,488 cases and 296,224 individually distributed units of fruit, vegetable, and sandwich products containing apples because they might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes which can cause fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. The recalled foods containing diced or sliced apples have use-by dates of July 8, 2012 through Aug. 20, 2012 and were sold at McDonald's, Burger King, Wawa and other retail locations throughout the area.   There is a McDonald's restaurant in Hellertown. In addition to Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the recalled products were produced and distributed by the Missa Bay, LLC facility to retailers and food service operators …

Iced Coffee is Awesome in All Its Forms

On a really hot day, I could drink gallons of it.

It's the yin to piping hot coffee's yang. It's the darker, colder side of the coffee moon. And if I could just drink one thing for the rest of my life, I think it would be my choice. Of course, I'm referring to that most frigid and caffeinated of libations: iced coffee. And thankfully, I live in a country where it's sold just about everywhere, especially in the summer months. I say thankfully, because there are countries on Earth where (gasp) iced coffee is not commonly available. Yes, it is true. The iced coffee cult has yet to fully encircle the globe, although considering the number of expat Americans living abroad these days, I'm sure it's making inroads in many places.  In other countries my favorite beverage is available, but it's …

Josh, The Gyro Co. is on Airport Rd. in Bethlehem, in the new shopping center. The gyros are phenomenal there as well. I have to say none of it tastes as good than when you are on a pebbled beach facing the Aegean, but it's close enough!   more ›

Proposed Traffic Light Worries Nearby Business Owners

The owners of McDonald's and Lucky's Auto Body discussed their concerns with the Saucon Valley Partnership last week.

The Saucon Valley Partnership began its first meeting of 2011 with the election of new officers. Lower Saucon Township Council member Priscilla deLeon was elected chair, Saucon Valley School Board member Lanita Lum was elected vice chair and Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan was elected secretary-treasurer. The highlight of the local council of government's Jan. 12 meeting, however, was a discussion about the traffic light long-proposed for the intersection of Polk Valley Road and Route 412/Main Street, on the border between Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township. Hanover Engineering Traffic Consultant James Milot was in attendance to update the partnership on plans for the light, which were expected to have been approved last year…

That whole area is a a hot mess at dismissal time. The kids come roaring down Polk Valley in a hurry to get across to McD's before the lines get too long. There should be a way for school traffic to use the street on the other side of the cemetery, where there is a light. If a light is what you need to control school traffic, you have one. Putting a light at Polk Valley will just make it worse …   more ›
