Two Accidents – One Fatal – Close I-78 in Lower Saucon

The highway remains closed in both directions as emergency crews continue to deal with two separate accidents.

UPDATE - 1:52pm: PennDOT has announced that I-78 westbound is now open between Route 33 and Route 412 in Northampton County. That section of the highway was closed earlier as authorities responded to and cleaned up a fatal accident. UPDATE - 10:30am: I-78 East was reopen as of 9:15am, according to PennDOT. The eastbound lanes were closed between Routes 309 and 412 earlier this morning following an accident. The westbound lanes of the highway remain closed between Routes 33 and 412 as officials continue to clean up a hazardous materials spill and investigate a fatal accident that occurred around 4am. If you're trying to use Interstate 78 in Northampton County this morning, forget about it--at least for the time being. As of 8:20am …

Man from Lower Saucon Killed in I-78 Wreck

The man killed in Tuesday's crossover accident has been identified as 21-year-old Maxwell Musselman.

The man killed in a crossover accident on I-78 East in Lower Saucon Township Tuesday was from the township, according to published reports citing the Northampton County Coroner's office appearing in the Morning Call, the Express-Times and WFMZ. Maxwell Musselman, 21, of Leithsville Road, has been identified as the driver who crossed over the median into oncoming eastbound traffic near mile marker 64, striking a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Victoria Genteel of Bangor. Genteel reportedly suffered moderate injuries and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment. The driver of a third vehicle, which was struck when Genteel's minivan spun out, was not injured, according to state police. As a result of the accident, traffic in the area was …

I-78 East in Lower Saucon Township Has Reopened

A portion of the busy interstate was closed following a deadly accident between routes 309 and 412.

UPDATE: At 2:41pm the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that I-78 East in Northampton County has reopened. The interstate highway had been closed at Route 309 following a fatal motor vehicle accident earlier today. The accident reportedly occurred near mile marker 64, between the Route 309 and Route 412 exits, and the county coroner was reportedly been called to the scene. WFMZ earlier reported that two vehicles collided head on.
