County Officials Undecided on Meadows Road Bridge

Northampton County officials have not determined what should happen to the structurally deficient historic Meadows Road Bridge in Lower Saucon Township, according to a report.

A Lower Saucon Township bridge that earlier this year was labeled one of the most endangered in the country by a bridge preservation website may be living up to its threatened reputation. According to a story published July 8 in the Express-Times, the 1858 stone arch Meadows Road Bridge is one of several spans that are of limited use or would not be cost efficient to replace, according to Northampton County documents. The Meadows Road Bridge, which spans the Saucon Creek just west of Route 412, south of Hellertown, is reportedly not on a list of more than 40 county-owned or shared-control bridges that County Executive John Stoffa is expected to ask County Council to consider repairing or replacing with approval of a bond for up to $20 …

I agree. Aside from the fact that this bridge was a part of my childhood, to tear down such a beautiful, charming, and historic bridge would be so very wrong. We are fortunate to have this in our town. How could this even be considered...   more ›

Old Mill Bridge Restoration Project Moving Ahead

On June 20, Lower Saucon Township Council authorized township staff to advertise for bids to restore the historic bridge across the Saucon Creek at the end of Old Mill Road.

Lower Saucon Township's historic Old Mill Bridge will soon be getting a makeover. On June 20, township council voted 4-0 to approve a motion authorizing staff to advertise for bids for the project, once all permits for the renovations have been secured. The landmark metal truss bridge is located at the end of Old Mill Road, where it spans the Saucon Creek in an area that has been designated by the National Park Service as the Ehrhart's Mill Historic District. The bridge is no longer open to vehicular traffic, however it is a popular crossing point for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly due to its proximity to the nearby Saucon Rail Trail. Township manager Jack Cahalan told council that the plans are to "repair and rehabilitate" the …

Patch Poll: Can The Movies Be Saved?

With one historic Hellertown landmark recently demolished, some are wondering if the borough's movie theater will ultimately share the same fate as the Reinhard School.

Can a large, old, deteriorating building that's been closed up for the better part of a decade be saved from the wrecking ball? As Saucon Valley residents recently watched the last vestiges of the Reinhard School fall to the ground, some perhaps wondered whether another prominent local landmark will ultimately share the same fate. The Movies in Hellertown was recently listed for sale, but who might be willing to purchase the structure and how much it would cost to restore it to its former grandeur have been subjects of speculation. Redevelopment ideas for the late-1930s Art Deco movie house have been discussed within the past year, but a nagging concern has been the lack of nearby parking. What do you think of The Movies' chances for …

This building can/should be saved. Without question. Movies are TOO EXPENSIVE. Show movies here - even second run ones - and charge $4 a ticket. The place will be packed. Anyone interested in getting something going?   more ›

Historic Bridge Website Calls Local Span One of Most 'Endangered'

The Meadows Road Bridge in Lower Saucon Township has been named a 2012 TRUSS Award winner by the historic bridge preservation website www.BridgeHunter.com.

A well-traveled Lower Saucon Township stone arch bridge that was built in 1858 has been named to a historic preservation website's list of U.S. bridges that are, in its opinion, the most endangered and worthy of saving. BridgeHunter.com announced Feb. 13 that the four-span Meadows Road bridge across the Saucon Creek, just south of Hellertown, was a winner of one of this year's TRUSS awards. "The bridge is a rarity, even in a state with an abundance of stone arches," a press release about the award stated. "It's not exactly like we can find four-span antebellum stone arch bridges around every corner. Thankfully, local officials do consider the bridge to be an historic landmark, agreeing to install a historic marker next to the bridge in …

A big thanks to James Baughn from www.bridgehunter.com for recognizing this great structure. He said it all, there are not bridges this old, around every corner. Also, a big thanks to Nathan Holt from www.historicbridges.org for visiting the bridge back in the summer of 2009 and documenting the bridge on his web site and helping to explain why the bridge is historic. I just wish the township …   more ›

Annual Pottery Festival Keeps Family Legacy Alive

Stahl’s Pottery continues with traditional redware pottery-making in Powder Valley, near Zionsville.

Traditional and contemporary potters--32 in all--demonstrated their craft and sold their wares at the 24th Annual Summer Pottery Festival in Powder Valley (near Zionsville). The festival was held June 18 at Stahl’s Pottery, a historic landmark and museum in the area.  The Stahl’s Pottery Preservation Society sponsored the event, held on the homestead of Thomas and Alice Stahl. The society, which is made up entirely of family members, works to preserve the traditional artform of redware pottery.  This Pennsylvania German style of pottery was first made by Charles Stahl from 1850 until his death in 1896. Stahl's sons, Thomas and Isaac, then took over the business. By 1902, however, the family could no longer compete with mass production …
