JCL Automotive Donates Bicycle to Hellertown PD

The donation was recognized April 18, when Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp and Mayor Richard Fluck visited the car dealership to present a certificate of appreciation to Steve Bartholomew and Chris Limantour of JCL.

When Steve Bartholomew, of JCL Automotive, read a recent story on Hellertown Patch about the borough police department's plan to purchase a bicycle for patroling the Saucon Rail Trail, he said he knew he wanted to help. And JCL subsequently did just that, by donating more than $1,400 to the Hellertown Police Department to fund the purchase of a new bicycle. The generous donation was recently recognized by Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp and Mayor Richard Fluck, both of whom visited JCL on April 18 to present a certificate of appreciation to Bartholomew and his colleague Chris Limantour. Block Watch Meeting Planned for April 24

The Hellertown Block Watch will host Northampton County Emergency Management Director Robert Mateff as its guest speaker at its Wednesday, April 24 meeting.

Northampton County Emergency Management Director Robert Mateff will be the guest speaker at the Wednesday, April 24, 2013 meeting of the Hellertown Block Watch, the borough's police department announced in a news release. A county emergency management response vehicle/mobile command center will also be on site for viewing. An advance meeting agenda lists a discussion of crime statistics and comments by Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp. The public meeting will be held on the second floor of Hellertown Borough Hall, 685 Main St., at 7 p.m. The block watch typically meets on a bi-monthly basis, and is led by Hellertown Patrolman Tim Piotrowski.

Free Child ID Event Scheduled for Sunday

The Hellertown Police Department will host the event for local families at St. Theresa School on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10:30am.

In conjunction with the start of 2013 Catholic Schools Week, the Hellertown Police Department will issue free child IDs to local families this Sunday at St. Theresa School, Chief Robert Shupp told Borough Council on Tuesday. The IDs, which typically feature photos and fingerprints, can be useful to law enforcement authorities in the event that a child goes missing. "Anybody who has a child, feel free to bring them up," Shupp said of the child ID event, which will begin at 10:30am. St. Theresa School is located at 300 Leonard St., Hellertown. In other business, Shupp said his department's officers have been monitoring the Saucon Rail Trail following a recent complaint by a borough resident about excessive dog feces near the Walnut Street …

Borough Police Officer Promoted to Corporal

Hellertown Police Department patrolman Matt Andree was sworn in as a corporal by Mayor Richard Fluck on Jan. 22.

Hellertown Police Department patrolman Matt Andree was unanimously promoted to the rank of corporal at Borough Council's Jan. 22 meeting. Andree was sworn in as corporal by Mayor Richard Fluck and received a bar signifying his new rank from Police Chief Robert Shupp. In addition to family members, several of Andree's colleagues were present for the brief ceremony, which was held at the start of the meeting.

Woman Left Crossroads Hotel Without Paying, Police Say On Nov. 26 at about 7:30pm police say officers were called to Matey's Crossroads Hotel for a report of a theft. Police said that information provided by employees helped them to identify Lindsey Lee Fluck, of the 500 block of Vine Street, Perkasie, as the "suspect who ran out the restaurant without paying the check." In a press release, police said Fluck had presented her driver's license to an employee while she was in the restaurant's bar area. She will receive a citation for theft of services, they added. Man Arrested for DUI on West Water Street On Nov. 8 at 4:27pm police say officers were investigating a report of a suspicious person on West Water Street when they witnessed Robert J. Holowka, 59, of the first block of West Saucon Street, Hellertown, operating a vehicle in that area. Police said in a press release that Holowka was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI, following an investigation. Holowka's blood alcohol content (BAC) was determined to be .26 percent and he has been charged with DUI, police said. Council Considering Tax Increase, Layoffs

Hellertown Borough Council announced Monday that it's considering a one mill tax increase and possible layoffs in order to balance the borough's 2013 proposed budget.

Residents of Hellertown could see a modest tax increase next year. The preliminary version of the borough budget approved 6-1 by Hellertown Borough Council Nov. 5 includes a one mill property tax increase, which is equivalent to $50 per year for a home with an assessed value of $50,000. One mill is equal to $130,659 and the current (2012) borough millage rate is 17.75, which is equivalent to a tax burden of $887.50 per year on a house with an assessed value of $50,000, according to information shared by the borough. An increase of the millage rate to 18.75 mills would thus increase that annual burden to $937.50 on a home valued at $50,000. Borough Officer Promoted to Rank of Corporal

Hellertown police officer Jeffrey Johnston was sworn in by Mayor Richard Fluck at borough council's Oct. 1 meeting.

At borough council's Oct. 1 meeting there were congratulations for Hellertown police officer Jeffrey Johnston, who was recently promoted to the rank of corporal. Johnston was officially sworn in as corporal by Mayor Richard Fluck at the start of the meeting. Many of his family members were in attendance for the brief ceremony. Following the swearing in Johnston received well-wishes from Police Chief Robert Shupp, members of council and other borough officials.

Woman Arrested for DUI at Main and Water Streets On Sept. 11 at 12:18am police say Margaret M. Vietro, 65, of the 100 block of Saucon View Drive, Bethlehem, was stopped for traffic violations at Main and Water streets. Police said in a press release that Vietro was subsequently arrested for suspicion of DUI and was determined to have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .14 percent. She will be charged with DUI, they said. Men Arrested on Drug Charges Outside Bar On July 27 at 12:41am police say officers were dispatched to the rear of Beer Mussels, 1214 Main St., for a report of "suspicious activity involving several males inside a white sedan." In a press release police said the officers made contact with the men upon their arrival at the scene. At that time the officers allegedly observed drug paraphernalia, and police said Apostoli Constantine Mouras, 22, of the 600 block of Main Street, Hellertown, and Christopher A.
