Papa John's on Planning Commission Agenda

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Hellertown Planning Commission will hear a proposal from an applicant who wants to open a Papa John's pizza franchise at 1236 Main St.

At their Tuesday meeting, members of the Hellertown Planning Commission will hear a proposal from an applicant who wants to open a Papa John's pizza shop at 1236 Main St. The property where the business would be located is in a mixed zoning district near the intersection of Main and Ackerman streets. Other nearby retail establishments include CVS, Doggy Dao and Cat's Meow, and Saucon Valley Music. In a February poll published on Patch, more than 80 percent of respondents said they did not want Papa John's to open in Hellertown. Many cited the number of pizza places that are already open in the borough in objecting to the proposal. "The last thing Hellertown needs is another pizza place, let alone a bad chain pizza place," wrote Marc Kovacs…

Plan for Former Valley Excavating Approved

The Hellertown Planning Commission approves a plan presented by John Ingles, who owns Freedom Landscaping.

Hellertown planners unanimously approved a redevelopment proposal March 12 for the former Valley Excavating at 1700 Clauser St. The proposal to turn the property into the new home of Freedom Landscaping was presented by owner John Ingles, who said most of his business' work is performed in the Saucon Valley area. According to its website, "Freedom Lawn Care & Landscaping is a premier full service property maintenance and landscaping company located in the Lehigh Valley, serving residential and commercial customers for more than (25) years." Ingles said his business is normally shut down from December to March, unless there is snow to be plowed. "We don’t have any Sunday operations and Saturday operations are very rare," he said. Among the …

Water Street Park Improvements Discussed

Hellertown Borough Council discussed last week a proposed plan to upgrade the popular borough recreation area.

Improvements to Hellertown's Water Street Park were part of a discussion had by Borough Council Feb. 19. The discussion followed a Feb. 12 Hellertown Planning Commission detailed review of the proposed plan to upgrade the popular recreation area, which is bordered by the Saucon Rail Trail. The park also hosts the seasonal Saucon Valley Farmers' Market, which from May through November attracts hundreds of visitors each Sunday. Creating additional space for the market's vendors and visitors--as well as room for future expansion--was part of the council discussion. Hellertown mayor and farmers' market volunteer Richard Fluck said the SVFM currently has 46 vendors, and he told the planning commission it is now the second biggest weekly farmers…

Planners Approve Accounting Office at 1012 Main Street

The accounting office will serve the adjacent Saucon Valley Manor, as well as Whitehall Manor. A site plan presented June 12 won unanimous approval from Hellertown planners.

A site plan for an accounting office inside a former residence at 1012 Main Street, Hellertown, was unanimously approved by borough planners June 12. David Hart, vice president of land development for Pennsylvania Venture Capital, told the planning commission that the building will house the accounting department for both Saucon Valley and Whitehall manors, which are assisted living facilities for seniors. Saucon Valley Manor is adjacent to the former residence and will provide auxiliary parking in its lot, although Hart said parking should not be an issue since just three employees will work out of 1012 Main Street and there is off-street parking for two vehicles in a garage. The third employee will park at Saucon Valley Manor, according …

Proposed Performing Arts Studio to Be Discussed at Borough Planning Meeting

The Hellertown Borough Planning Commission will review a plan for a performing arts studio at 1304 Main Street at its Feb. 15, 2012 meeting.

Hellertown Planning Commission members will consider a proposal by local business owner Dano Guerrieri at their Wednesday, Feb. 15 meeting. In a Feb. 14, 2012 letter from planning commisssion engineer Bryan Smith of Barry Isett & Associates, details of the proposal for a performing arts studio at 1304 Main Street, Hellertown, were revealed. "The applicant proposes a change in use from apartment to a performing arts studio," Smith wrote. "It is our understanding that no exterior building modifications or additions are being proposed by the applicant and (that) the studio will replace the second floor apartment." The two-story building is located at the corner of Main and Ackerman streets and has shared off-street parking at its rear, with …

Rare Coin Shop Proposal Wins Planners' Approval

A variance by the Hellertown Zoning Hearing Board is still required before owners Karony and Kerry Borger can open the business on East High Street.

Correction: There will NOT be a Hellertown Zoning Hearing Board meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 21. An earlier published version of this story stated that there would be a meeting on that date. The East High Street coin shop variance will be on the ZHB's January 2012 meeting agenda. A proposal for a business that deals in rare coins won the unanimous approval of the Hellertown Planning Commission Dec. 13, but applicants Karony and Kerry Borger must still seek a non-conforming use variance from the Hellertown Zoning Hearing Board before they can open their business at 227 East High Street. The matter will be voted upon at the Zoning Hearing Board's next meeting, which will be held Jan. 18, 2012 at 6:30pm in Hellertown Borough Hall. Planning …

Zoning Officer Discusses Delayed Dunkin' Donuts Opening

On Dec. 5, Hellertown Zoning Officer Joe Chernaskey told Borough Council that the popular donut shop franchise is now expected to open later this month or early next year.

Local fans of the coffee-and-donut chain Dunkin' Donuts have a little longer to wait until a franchise opens at 730 Main Street in Hellertown, the borough's zoning officer announced Dec. 5 at a Borough Council meeting. The donut shop--which will occupy the former M&T Bank building--is now expected to open later this month or very early next year, Joe Chenaskey said. It was earlier predicted that it would open in mid-November. "They are moving very quickly," Chernaskey said of the crews that are renovating the building, which is located across the street from Hellertown Borough Hall and Detwiller Plaza. Chernaskey added that the crews have a deadline of Dec. 18 by which to complete their work, but said he does not expect them to meet that …

Planning Commission Approves Several Site Plans

Plans for businesses at 427 Main Street, 1304 Main Street and 46 West Water Street were approved at the Hellertown Borough Planning Commission's Oct. 11 meeting.

In addition to approving a site plan for a by-appointment-only patio furniture business at 720 Main Street, members of the Hellertown Borough Planning Commission approved several other site plans presented by prospective business and property owners at their Oct. 11 meeting. At 427 Main Street, a site plan for a Miracle Ear store was approved. Building owner Dano Guerrieri, who also owns the Main Street Gym in Hellertown, told the planning commission that the three-story brick building is currently in the midst of being renovated. Miracle Ear currently occupies a different Main Street storefront and plans to move to 427 Main Street once renovations are complete, he explained. "I think they'll have two employees working there," Guerreri …

Patio Furniture Outlet Green-Lit by Borough Planners

The patio furniture business at 720 Main Street will function primarily as a warehouse, with customers visiting by appointment only, owner Andrew Panick told the Hellertown Planning Commission Oct. 11.

A site plan for a patio furniture warehouse and retail business proposed by Neighbors Home and Garden Center owner Andrew Panick won the unanimous approval of the Hellertown Planning Commission Oct. 11. If Panick is successful in seeking a variance for parking from the borough's Zoning Hearing Board, the business will be located at 720 Main Street, which is behind the former M&T Bank that will soon house a Dunkin' Donuts. At the planning meeting Panick explained that there will be limited traffic to and from the 7,000-square-foot building, which he said will house several truckloads of patio furniture. Customers will visit the location by "appointment only," he explained, and the furniture will be delivered during November and December. …
