The 6th annual Student Artistry Exhibit featuring works by Saucon Valley middle and high school students will open April 27 at the Heller Homestead in Lower Saucon Township.
Works by Saucon Valley high school and middle school students will be displayed in a local gallery beginning later this month. The Saucon Valley Conservancy has announced that the 6th annual Student Artistry Exhibit at the Heller Homestead will open with a public reception on Saturday, April 27. The exhibit is coordinated with the Saucon Valley School District and is under the direction of the district's related arts teachers. The homestead, which is located at 1890-92 Friedensville Road in Lower Saucon Township, will also host other special events that day in conjunction with Saucon Valley History Day. A couple of weeks ago Jeff King of Hellertown donated a valuable historical artifact to the Michael Heller Homestead operated by Saucon Valley Conservancy. This item, I told him, should live here, and it will be dedicated on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. during Saucon Valley History Day. It is none other than the last cornerstone of the Limekiln School House, put in place when the building was reconstructed for the last time in 1891. The edifice had been constructed first in 1802 but had burned down and was rebuilt in 1864. It is most appropriately to be displayed at the homestead since nearly 20 Hellers lie at rest in the adjoining graveyard, including Michael Heller, the Elder, who named three of his sons Michael. It isn't too early to mark your calendar for April 27, when Saucon Valley History Day will take place at local historic sites. A Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce business community event will be held at the same time.
Do you love Saucon Valley history? Do you support Saucon Valley businesses? If you do, you won't want to miss everything that's scheduled for Saturday, April 27. That's when the sixth annual Saucon Valley History Day will take place from 9am to 2pm at several local historic sites, including the Wagner Grist Mill in Hellertown and the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse and Heller Homestead in Lower Saucon Township. The participating history day organizations are the Hellertown Historical Society, the Lower Saucon Township Historical Society and the Saucon Valley Conservancy. A 'Meet the Artists’ Reception' featuring the Bethlehem Palette Club will be hosted by the Saucon Valley Conservancy at the Heller Homestead on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Works by the Bethlehem Palette Club's Plein Air Group are on display at the Heller Homestead from March 2 to April 21. The gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. A reception will be held March 4 from 7 to 9.
The Heller Homestead is located at 1890-92 Friedensville Road, Lower Saucon Township. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lee Weidner's "Saucon Secrets, Volume 2" is being published in time for the 2012 holiday season. The author will discuss some of the stories in his book at upcoming book-signings in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township.

Man Arrested for DUI Following Black River Road Accident On July 3 at 6:43am police say they responded to a report of a car off the road on Black River Road. Police said they arrived at the scene of the accident to find that Colin Strawn, 19, of the 400 block of West Hamilton Street, Allentown, had gone off the road and struck a tree. "(The) officer spoke with the driver, who advised that he was travelling too fast while rounding the curve in the roadway," police said in a press release. A blood test determined Strawn's blood alcohol content (BAC) to be .11 percent, they added. Strawn has been charged with DUI, underage drinking and careless driving.
