Demonstrators Crash Romney Appearance

Former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell and Democratic supporters staged a counter-protest at a Bucks County Wawa where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was supposed to have appeared Saturday.

Update 6:30pm. ABC News reports that Romney greeted about 50 people at the other Wawa, including a little league baseball team. "We knew yesterday what they were going to pull," an unnamed Romney campaign aide told ABC. Update 1:55pm: Citing security concerns, Romney instead made a brief appearance before some members of the media at a different Wawa location on Route 309 in upper Bucks County. Update 1:15pm: Media members at the scene have been told that Romney is no longer appearing at this Wawa location and will appear shortly at another location in the area. Initial story follows. Many Americans wether Democrat or Republican have no idea what is happening to our great country. They buy into the propaganda and run with it without using their critical thinking skills. I've been a lifelong Democrat and have always supported the Democratic candidate. However, this time I cannot. President Obama has stepped way out of line with what the United States is all about. He didn't …   more ›

Auditor General: GOP Welfare Cuts Good, Reforms Would Be Better

House GOP, Corbett administration at odds over possible savings from fraud.

Auditor General Jack Wagner says state House Republican's push to cut $470 million from the state Department of Public Welfare is one way of forcing the department to root out waste, fraud and abuse, but this approach does not entirely solve the fundamental problem of accountability.  “It’s a two-phase issue,” Wagner said during a telephone interview May 12. “It’s not just cutting the budget; it’s also management reform within the system to create better accountability.” Wagner, a Democrat, has been thrown into the forefront of the state House Republicans' budget proposal introduced earlier this month, which seeks to restore some of Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed cuts to basic and higher education, but eliminate funding from the Department of…

Taxpayers Will Cover Costs of Photo IDs for Voters Under Proposed Change

Democrats, including Rep. Steve Samuelson of Northampton County, argue the new rules will disenfranchise voters.

An effort to fight voting fraud could cost state taxpayers millions, though it’s a price some lawmakers are willing to pay. New requirements intended to cut down on fraudulent voters were passed by the House State Government Committee on May 9 and will head to the House for a final vote. The bill would require voters to show official photo identification each time they go to their polling place to cast a ballot. Voters now have to provide identification only the first time they vote at a specific polling place. The new requirement would not take effect until the primary elections in the spring of 2012, unless there is a special election scheduled for earlier in 2012. An amendment added to the bill May 9 would allow any voter who did not …

Expanded Castle Doctrine Passes State House, Again

Allows for the use of deadly force in public for self-defense.

A bill to expand the legal use of deadly violence in self-defense passed the state House April 12 and is headed to the state Senate.  The so-called Castle Doctrine bill was approved by the state House of Representatives with a vote of 164-37. The bill would allow individuals to use deadly force in self-defense without a requirement to retreat to their own homes first. The provision holds as long as the individual has a right to be in the place where they are and is in immediate danger of bodily harm.  Pennsylvania law allows for the use of deadly force in defense of self within the home or on an individual’s property. The provisions included in H.B. 40 expand that same defense to outside the home, such as in a car. It also would allow the …

Years ago my wife was charged by the police after defending herself with a legally carried firearm. There were several men that were making death threats and carring weapons, and THEY were able to press charges against her. Her firearm was taken and she had to pay fines and endure probation, and the fact that her assailants were free to persue her. As a result, we stopped going out locally (…   more ›

Employer Taxes Climbing to Pay Back PA’s Unemployment Debt

Does it violate Corbett’s ‘no-tax’ pledge?

Unemployment taxes for Pennsylvania employers will continue to climb for years to come, according to testimony earlier this week from acting Secretary of Labor and Industry Patrick Beaty.  But state business associations do not see the hike as a violation of Gov. Tom Corbett’s campaign promise not to raise taxes or fees.  “This is not on Governor Corbett. He inherited this problem. We need to fix our unemployment system,” said Kevin Shivers, state director of the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, known as NFIB.  The state, under former Gov. Ed Rendell, borrowed $3 billion from the federal government to remain solvent during the continuing recession, and now it’s time to pay the money back.  Beaty told…
