Rally for Tougher Gun Laws Held in Easton

Along with several Lehigh Valley mayors and Easton police officers, the rally was attended by Hellertown and Lower Saucon members of the group Organizing For Action.

Congress may be on its Easter/Passover recess, but the group Mayors Against Illegal guns doesn't want it to catch a break. On Thursay, MAIG and Organizing For Action led a series of 100 rallies around the country asking people to contact their legislators to get them to support stronger gun laws. One of those rallies happened in Easton's Centre Square, where Easton Mayor Sal Panto told supporters current background check laws are "milquetoast" regulations that overlook things like gun shows. "You get a job today, you get a background check," Panto said. "You rent an apartment, you get a background check." Yet more than six million guns were sold with no background checks last year, the mayor said. MAIG also wants Congress to make gun …

Pit Bulls Get a Bad Rap, Owners Say

A local shelter says the dogs are victims of overbreeding and abandonment.

Easton Patch recently reported on a drug raid in the West Ward in which a dealer allegedly kept heroin under the bed where his 2-year-old son was sleeping. Readers were disturbed by that detail, but also by another one: The story noted the presence of a pit bull in the apartment at the time of the raid. Fans of the breed say it's another example of pit bulls getting a bad rap. "Had the dog been a Labrador retriever or a dachshund or any other breed, would the breed have been mentioned?" wrote reader Dave Rex. "On behalf of all the gentle and loving bully breeds in the West Ward: we resent the implication of guilt by association." One of those pit bulls is Ace, adopted last year by West Ward resident Patti Berger. Berger already owned …

Center for Animal Health & Welfare Marks 100 Years

In an Easton gallery exhibit, the former Northampton County SPCA celebrates its anniversary while examining the challenges of caring for abandoned animals.

The Center for Animal Health & Welfare in Williams Township is marking its 100th anniversary this month with an unusual exhibit at an Easton art gallery. The exhibit opened Saturday at ConneXions Gallery, 213 Northampton St., where it spotlights the challenges the organization is facing while celebrating a milestone anniversary for the former Northampton County SPCA. The exhibit includes photos and memorabilia from the organization's century-long history. It also includes a display called “Boxes of Kittens,” an awareness exhibit that demonstrates what it takes for the organization to care for the boxes of kittens that are often literally left on the center's doorstep. Nearly 100 such boxes were left at the center in 2012. The display …

Battle of the Bulge Vets Tell Story in Easton

Morris Metz and Lionel Adda recently shared memories of their participation in the pivotal World War II battle.

It seemed like the shells would never stop falling. That's what Lionel Adda remembers. That, and the cold. Sixty-eight years ago, German forces launched a massive assault on Allied soldiers in the Ardennes region of France, Belgium and Luxembourg. The conflict, which lasted for several frigid weeks in December 1944 and January 1945, would become known as The Battle of the Bulge. On Dec. 20, two survivors of that battle--Adda and Morris Metz--shared their memories at Easton's Sigal Museum. For Adda, it meant going back to a place called Elsenborn Ridge, where American troops found themselves under constant attack from the Germans. "They were shelling incessantly," Adda said, recalling seeing one officer whose arm was just shredded flesh. “…

District Judge Gay Elwell Dead at 54

The longtime district judge and former newspaper reporter was found dead in her home.

Longtime Northampton County District Judge Gay Elwell was found dead Monday at her Easton home Monday. She was 54. Northampton County Court Administrator James Onembo told Easton Patch he had gotten word of her death on Monday afternoon. County Coroner Zach Lysek told the Express-Times she had died at home. Elwell had served as distrist judge in downtown Easton since 1996. Prior to that, she had worked for several years as a reporter in the Morning Call's Easton bureau, and was a familiar face at the Northampton County Courthouse, Onembo said. "Her understanding of the justice system made her a natural for the position," he said. "She was compassionate, but she could be tough." Elwell's office at 400 Northampton St. was closed Monday …

Voter ID Law Opponents Rally in Easton

A rally against Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law drew about 65 people to Easton's Centre Square as the state Supreme Court considers a formal challenge to the law.

A peaceful but energetic rally against Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law drew about 65 people to Centre Square in Easton on Saturday. The recurring message of the event was that Pennsylvania’s the law amounts to naked suppression of a basic American civil right. “Causing people to go through all these hoops is un-American,” declared Easton Mayor Sal Panto, the first of a lengthy roster of speakers who passed around a bullhorn. “We know that this was done politically,” said Panto, who added that it was the rushed “process” more than the law itself that concerned him. Organized by Easton’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the rally attracted a disparate array of community and religious leaders, …
