Driver's License Centers Closed Nov. 5 in Wake of Voter ID Ruling

PennDOT had planned to open its driver's license centers the day before Election Day but the centers will be closed Nov. 5 since the state's Voter ID law has been put on hold.

PennDOT driver's license centers, including the ones serving Lehigh and Northampton counties, will be closed Monday, Nov. 5 in keeping with their usual schedule of being closed Mondays. PennDOT had planned to open the centers on the day before Election Day so voters could get state-approved photo identification to take to the polls. Since then, a court ruling has put implementation of the state's Voter ID law on hold. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) -the union representing its driver licensing center employees - asked that PennDOT reconsider the decision to open the centers the day before the general election in light of the Commonwealth Court decision related to the Voter ID law. As a result, …

New Teen Driver Law Takes Effect Dec. 27

Teens with driving permits must have 65 hours experience, instead of 50, before getting their junior licenses. The new law also restricts their passengers.

A law that takes effect Dec. 27 requires teen drivers with a learner's permit to have 65 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, rather than the current 50, before they can go for their junior driver's license. Of the additional 15 hours driving with a supervising licensed driver, 10 hours must be at night and five hours must be in bad weather, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Current permit holders who haven't passed the driver's license test by tomorrow must meet the new requirements.   For the first six months after getting their driver's license, junior drivers under 18 will only be allowed to transport one passenger who is under 18 and not of their immediate family, the law says. After six months, they can …

Under the really old laws you went and took your driving test, when I got my license I took the permit test and could have taken the driving test the next day. I think the key difference today then with us is the responsibility decline, how can we give our kids a weapon that they will not be held accountable for if they harm or kill someone, or break the law behind the wheel.   more ›

Commission Recommends Higher Vehicle and Driver Fees, Gas Tax Increase

The Transportation Funding Advisory Commission created by Governor Tom Corbett is looking to generate $2.5 billion in new revenue.

Drivers in Pennsylvania can expect to pay more at the pump and higher fees for vehicle registration and driver's licenses, according to a commission aimed at closing the state’s $3.5 billion transportation budget gap.  “These are direct user fees that have a dedicated spending source,” said state Secretary of Transportation Barry Schoch, chairman of the Transportation Funding Advisory Commission. “There is a direct correlation between the user fee and the benefit to the user. These are motor license fund fees, and they will go directly back into that.”  The commission, formed by Gov. Tom Corbett to study the needs of the state’s transportation and mass transit infrastructure, completed its work July 18 and will present its final report to …

Expert: Photo ID Best Way to Detect Voter Fraud

Bill awaiting final passage in state House.

A proposal requiring voters in Pennsylvania to show photo identification every time they go to the polls is moving toward passage in the state House, but experts are divided over the impact the legislation will have on state elections. The bill would require voters to show a driver's license or other form of state or federal photo ID as proof of their identity each and every time. Currently, voters have to prove their identity the first time they got to a new polling place, and sign the voter roll for each subsequent trip. The legislation is modeled on a similar bill passed in Indiana in 2005. Groups on the right say the added requirements are a common sense way to make elections more legitimate and fair, but some on the left point to the …

Taxpayers Will Cover Costs of Photo IDs for Voters Under Proposed Change

Democrats, including Rep. Steve Samuelson of Northampton County, argue the new rules will disenfranchise voters.

An effort to fight voting fraud could cost state taxpayers millions, though it’s a price some lawmakers are willing to pay. New requirements intended to cut down on fraudulent voters were passed by the House State Government Committee on May 9 and will head to the House for a final vote. The bill would require voters to show official photo identification each time they go to their polling place to cast a ballot. Voters now have to provide identification only the first time they vote at a specific polling place. The new requirement would not take effect until the primary elections in the spring of 2012, unless there is a special election scheduled for earlier in 2012. An amendment added to the bill May 9 would allow any voter who did not …
