Saucon Valley Residents Graduate from DeSales

A number of local residents graduated from the Center Valley college in commencement exercises held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.

DeSales University held its mid-year commencement on Saturday, Jan. 19, in Billera Hall on the Center Valley campus. During the ceremony, Rev. Bernard F. O'Connor, OSFS, president of DeSales University, conferred degrees upon 156 graduating students for January 2013, including 92 bachelor's and 64 master's. Among them were: Diana Delsalto of Hellertown graduated with a bachelor's of science in psychology. Daniel Hausmann of Hellertown graduated with a bachelor's of science in nursing. Karen McDermott of Hellertown graduated with a master's of arts in education in technology in education K-12. Christopher Philbin of Hellertown graduated with a bachelor's of arts in management. "Fag" Graffiti Sparked DeSales Petition

DeSales alumnus and McShea Leadership award-winner Tim Gallagher sat down for an interview with Patch on DeSales, diversity and the action that pushed him to write online petition about same-sex rights.

When Tim Gallagher was a resident adviser at DeSales University his sophomore year, he says a freshman found the word "fag" carved into his front door. That action started a series of events that led the alumnus to start an online petition against DeSales policy this week. On Monday, Gallagher posted the petition on Change.org in response to repeated denials by university officials to allow an LGBT student group to form on campus.  The controversy comes during the same week that same-sex marriage is sparking both demonstrations of support and protests at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide. A university is its students. And if a majority of its students are gay or gay-affirmative and wish to mobilize to create a more tolerant environment, then the university should listen. And this "Go somewhere else if you don't like DeSales" sentiments are simply ridiculous. Local Students Inducted Into Math Honor Society

Jennifer Duncan and Joseph Marlin, both of whom are DeSales University students from Hellertown, were recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Tau Chapter of the national mathematics honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon.

Two Hellertown-area students attending DeSales University were recently inducted into the Pennsylvania Tau chapter of the national mathematics honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon, according to a press release. Jennifer Duncan and Joseph Marlin, both of whom are computer science and math majors at the Center Valley school, were among the students inducted on May 26. "To qualify for membership students must rank in the top 35 percent of their class, while completing three college mathematics courses, maintaining at least a B average in all of them. Members are recognized and honored for individual achievements in mathematics," the press release states. Ann Compton to Take Audience Inside the White House

Compton, who was the first woman assigned to cover the White House for a television news organization, will deliver DeSales University's annual Marcon Lecture tonight at 7:30pm.

ABC News White House correspondent Ann Compton will deliver the 28th annual Frank L. Marcon Lecture at DeSales University tonight at 7:30pm. Compton has worked at ABC since 1973 and has covered the White House since 1974. The lecture series was established in 1983 in honor of prominent area businessman Frank L. Marcon. Marcon served on the DeSales University Board of Trustees from 1966 until his death in 1982. Other notable speakers who have delivered the Marcon Lecture include NBC Today Show anchor Bryant Gumbel, Emmy Award-winning television journalist Charlie Rose and Philadelphia news anchor and author Larry Kane.
