Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline says the bridge's design and engineering phase is expected to be completed by July 2014.
Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline recently provided an update on the current status of the High Street Bridge replacement project. The 103-year-old, one-lane timber bridge on the border between Bethlehem and Hellertown remains barricaded nearly two years after structural concerns led officials to close it. Kichline said the replacement project is currently in its design and engineering phase, which is being coordinated by officials from the City of Bethlehem. Although one end of the bridge borders the borough line, the structure itself is within the city's limits. Kichline said that according to current plans, the new bridge will be of a stone arch design, with two 14-foot lanes for traffic and pedestrian access on one side. The …

Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline said recently that a trap-neuter-release initiative implemented to help control the borough's feral cat population is working well.
A program that is meant to help control feral cat colonies in Hellertown is "moving along splendidly," Borough Manager Cathy Kichline reported earlier this month. Kichline said she had received an update from No Nonsense Neutering President Martha Kahan, with whom the borough has partnered on the introduction of the "Trap-Neuter-Release" program for strays. "Three pregnant females were trapped and spayed just this week," Kichline wrote in an April 9 email. She added that No Nonsense Neutering is currently "working with the (feral cat) feeders at 950 Front Street and the (Hellertown) Democratic Club," which is at the western end of Thomas Avenue. Meanwhile, flyers about the program are being distributed in other areas of town, Kichline said…

The Borough of Hellertown has partnered with No Nonsense Neutering to bring a 'Trap-Neuter-Return' program to neighborhoods where feral cat colonies are causing problems.
No Nonsense Neutering and the Borough of Hellertown want to help reduce the number of feral cats in several "colonies" that have formed throughout town. With that goal in mind, a free seminar on NNN's "Trap-Neuter-Return" program was held at Hellertown Borough Hall Feb. 28. The program is being introduced in the borough at a time when there are at least several cat colonies causing issues for residents who live west of Main Street, Borough Manager Cathy Kichline said. The borough is seeking grant money to help cover the per-cat fee that No Nonsense Neutering charges. Known feral cat colonies exist near the Hellertown Democratic Club at the west end of Thomas Avenue, near the Front Street Apartments, and near the intersection of Main and …

The new Hellertown concert stage will be constructed on the site of a World War II-era bomb shelter in Dimmick Park.
Work on Dimmick Park's long-awaited performance stage is set to begin this week, according to a memo shared by Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline. The work will include field work and trenching for the power supply that will be added, according to the memo. Although the borough's best-known park is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, it has never had a proper concert stage, in spite of the fact that original plans called for the construction of one. Instead, musical acts and speakers have stood atop a World War II-era concrete bunker to address and perform in front of audiences. Construction of a bandshell has been discussed for years, and was recently spearheaded by members of the volunteer Hellertown Enhancement Project, …

Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline announced Nov. 19 that a resident has requested an audible pedestrian signal be installed at the intersection of Main and Water streets.
A Hellertown resident has requested that the borough install an audible pedestrian signal at the intersection of Main and Water streets, borough manager Cathy Kichline told borough council Nov. 19. Audible pedestrian signals emit chirps, beeps or spoken recorded messages that can assist visually impaired pedestrians with crossing a street. Kichline said it's estimated that installing spoken-word signals at the busy downtown intersection would cost about $5,000. It would also require the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) consent, since Main Street is a state road. In fact, the intersection of Main and Water streets was recently upgraded with new pedestrian safety features, including ramps, crosswalks and visual signals. …

Municipal managers Cathy Kichline and Jack Cahalan told members of the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce Sept. 27 that local volunteer fire companies cooperate extensively with one another.
The day after Se-Wy-Co and Leithsville volunteer fire companies announced their formal merger--the first in the history of Northampton County--Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline and Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan discussed how the Saucon Valley's four all-volunteer companies continue to cooperate to better serve local residents. In a presentation to members of the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce that focused on projects involving intermunicipal cooperation, Cahalan said necessity has been a driving force behind the movement toward fire company consolidation. Years ago, he said, many of the volunteer members of Se-Wy-Co, Steel City, Southeastern and Dewey fire companies worked shifts at Bethlehem Steel, which …

Hellertown Borough Council announced Monday that it's considering a one mill tax increase and possible layoffs in order to balance the borough's 2013 proposed budget.
Residents of Hellertown could see a modest tax increase next year. The preliminary version of the borough budget approved 6-1 by Hellertown Borough Council Nov. 5 includes a one mill property tax increase, which is equivalent to $50 per year for a home with an assessed value of $50,000. One mill is equal to $130,659 and the current (2012) borough millage rate is 17.75, which is equivalent to a tax burden of $887.50 per year on a house with an assessed value of $50,000, according to information shared by the borough. An increase of the millage rate to 18.75 mills would thus increase that annual burden to $937.50 on a home valued at $50,000. The lone council member to vote against the preliminary budget as Thomas Rieger. Council also …

Local officials say the Saucon Valley Compost Center could open on additional days next year if enough volunteer help can be found.
The Saucon Valley Compost Center has become so popular that there's now demand for it to be open on additional days, Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan and Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline told members of the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce during a presentation Sept. 27. The center, which is currently open Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm in season, is jointly operated by the borough and the township for the benefit of their residents. Staffed by public works department employees from both municipalities, the center's success necessitated the use of ID cards beginning this year. Cahalan said more than 6,000 visits to the Springtown Hill Road, Lower Saucon facility have been recorded so far this year. And …

Borough Manager Cathy Kichline said a resident of Easton Road, Hellertown, asked that stop signs be installed at each intersection along that road. On Oct. 1 his proposal failed to gain the support of Borough Council.
An Easton Road resident wants stop signs installed at each intersection along his street, Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline told borough council Oct. 1. Kichline said the resident--who was only identified at the meeting by his last name, Streitel--communicated with her via a letter in July. In a response, Kichline said she explained to him that various initiatives have been implemented to help reduce speeding and improve pedestrian safety along the largely-residential Easton Road corridor. One of those initiatives involves the use of an electronic speed monitoring sign, which records the speed of passing motorists and lets them know how fast they're going with large numbers displayed on a brightly lit screen. Police Chief Robert …

The partnership represents an effort by Hellertown and Lower Saucon officials to create a single information source for local users of parks and other recreational facilities.
The Saucon Valley Recreation Partnership was one of a number of joint planning projects discussed by Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline and Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan at a breakfast presentation to members of the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce Sept. 27. The partnership represents an effort by local officials to better coordinate the use of Saucon Valley parks and recreational facilities that are enjoyed by residents of both Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township. "There was no one cohesive place for people to go (for information)," Kichline said. In the near future, an online portal will be unveiled that will provide residents with all local recreation-related information in one spot. A system for …

Awesome I can't wait till that is completed next year been waiting a long time to see some action really coming through on that bridge. Now only if the Pennsylvania county that owns the green bridge that is over the Saucon Creek can be fixed soon that would just be 10 times even better well at least were in progress finely with this bridge.   more ›
