The local cancer charity has announced that nominations are now being accepted for its 2013 honorary chairperson.

Relay, which annually raises funds for the American Cancer Society, has announced that nominations are being accepted by 2013 co-chair Carol Schneider. "All you have to do is email me (cas68@rcn.com) with information on a local (Saucon Valley) cancer survivor," Schneider explained in an email about the nominating process. "Please include the survivor’s name and phone number and a few brief sentences explaining why you want to nominate this survivor." Letters to the Editor

Letter: Local Reaction to Storm Inspires Pride

Carol Schneider says many local residents benefited from the kindness and quick-thinking of the Saucon Valley School District's administration and staff during the recent power outages.

To the Editor: I would like to thank Dr. Sandra Fellin and Wally Zimpfer, both from Saucon Valley School District. These two people were quick to get a handle on the needs of the residents within the school district by putting together a warming station/shelter for those affected (by the power outages). A fellow co-worker and I volunteered on Saturday night at the SVSD shelter/warming station and we saw firsthand how residents of the school district (Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown Borough) benefited from their kindness.  As Dr. Fellin stated to me, “it takes a team,” and she is absolutely correct. I would also like to thank Giant in Hellertown, the Hellertown Diner and the many residents who donated food to the shelter and all the …

Relay for Life Raises $55,000 to Fight Cancer

Saucon Valley Relay for Life has raised $55,000 toward its yearly goal of $76,500. The money raised by the local organization helps in the battle against cancer.

Saucon Valley Relay for Life has so far raised $55,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society and its ongoing fight against the deadly disease, co-chair Carol Schneider announced in an email to supporters May 25. The organization's 2012 fundraising goal is $76,400, and it's counting on its second annual charity Duck Derby in August and possibly another fundraiser to help put it over the top, Schneider said. Schneider also provided an update on team fundraising totals from Saucon Valley Relay for Life's signature annual event--its 24-hour walk-a-thon and mini-festival, which was held in Hellertown's Dimmick Park May 19-20. "We had 33 teams (11 were new) and 119 survivors registered," she said. The top teams (in order of most raised so far) …

Hellertown Fountain Glowing Purple for 'Relay'

The fountain in Hellertown's Dewtiller Plaza has turned purple in recognition of Saucon Valley Relay for Life, which will be held May 19-20. Coins tossed in the fountain this month will benefit the cancer charity.

In recognition of Saucon Valley Relay for Life--which annually raises funds for the American Cancer Society--the LED-lit fountain in Hellertown's Detwiller Plaza has turned purple, relay co-chair Carol Schneider announced last week. "All donations in the fountain for the month of May will be donated to the Relay For Life of Saucon Valley," Schneider also said. "Please take a walk down to the fountain and throw all your coins in and wish for the end of cancer." While throwing their coins in the fountain, Schneider encouraged donors to snap photos of themselves next to it, in order to be eligible for Relay's "A Picture for a Picture" contest. The group or individual winner of the contest--which is open to everyone--will win a Rave Motion …

Relay for Life Planning Charity 'Duck Derby'

To raise the money needed to meet its annual goal, Relay for Life of Saucon Valley will sponsor a Charity Duck Derby Aug. 7 in Hellertown's Water Street Park.

Assemble your teams and get all of your ducks in a row, because on Sunday, Aug. 7, Relay for Life of Saucon Valley will be sponsoring a Charity Duck Derby at Water Street Park in Hellertown. The goal of the fundraiser--which is modeled after a successful Duck Derby sponsored by Relay for Life in Allentown last year--is to help the local cancer charity raise enough money to meet its annual goal. Co-chair of Saucon Valley Relay for Life Carol Schneider said she hopes "people will see what a great family event this could be... walking around our local (Saucon Valley) farmers' market and supporting a great cause, while gaining awareness for the dreadful disease." There are a number of ways for teams and individuals to get involved in the Duck …
