Board Approves Engineering Courses, Earlier Start for School

The engineering classes will replace high school art electives. At its Jan. 12 meeting, the Saucon Valley School Board also approved a pre-Labor Day start to the school year in 2012.

In addition to its decision to retain full-time directorships for both band and chorus, the Saucon Valley School Board approved the addition of two engineering courses to the curriculum at Saucon Valley High School at its Jan. 12 meeting. The courses are a part of an engineering curriculum called Project Lead the Way and will replace low-enrollment art electives. “The Project Lead the Way curriculum has a total of eight courses that could be incorporated as students progress through the program,” principal Eric Kahler said in an e-mail to Patch. "Many of the courses are sequential in nature, so Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering are the first two Foundations Courses in the program. These are the two courses …

About 23 percent of the world’s population is Muslim, yet few outside the religion understand its holidays. Here’s a primer on Ramadan, a month-long celebration that began Aug. 1.

What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and the month when it is believed that the Holy Qur’an was sent by God to man. During that month, from dawn to dusk, observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, sex, smoking and anything that would distract from the observance of the faith. When does Ramadan take place? The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, which means it has 354 days a year instead of 365. Since each month begins with a crescent moon, pinpointing the exact start of Ramadan is debated even among Muslims. This year it runs from August 1 through August 29. In 2012, it is estimated the holy month will last from July 20 through August 18. Why fast during Ramadan? Muslims believe that fasting teaches …
