This year's Hellertown Police Department Officer of the Year award was presented to Investigator Matthew Andree at Borough Council's May 2 meeting.
Monday night's Hellertown Borough Council meeting was a special occasion for some of the borough's men in blue and their families. Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp and Mayor Richard Fluck began the meeting with a presentation of the police department's annual officer awards, which Shupp explained were first presented last year. The awards are a way of thanking "officers who showed a true commitment to the borough of Hellertown and keeping the residents safe," Shupp said before presenting awards to a total of five officers. The first award presented was the department's Narcotics Award, which is given to any officer who makes at least 12 narcotics-related arrests during the course of a year, he said. The four recipients of the 2010 …

The Cub Scout-sponsored event featured a wide variety of creative, custom-made cakes made by local fathers and sons.
Would you eat a cake baked to look like a cat's litter box...after the cat has, ahem, visited the litter box? Such a cake was just one of many unusual--even fantastical--tortes on display at Cub Scout Pack 319's annual Father-Son Cake Bake at First U.C.C. in Hellertown April 15. There were big cakes, little cakes, chocolate cakes, colorful cakes and altogether amazing cakes at the event, which has become a springtime tradition for Hellertown area Cub Scouts. This year's competition's judges included Magisterial District Judge David Tidd, Saucon Valley Farmers' Market Chairperson Shelley Goldberg, Curves owner Vera Tidd, Curves owner Patty Johnson and former Pack 319 Cubmaster Kristie Pinczok. The evening also included cupcake decorating …

Police chief says meetings will be held the last Wednesday of the month, every other month at Borough Hall.
Beginning later this month, public safety concerns will once again be addressed at regular block watch meetings in Hellertown. At Borough Council's April 4 meeting, Police Chief Robert Shupp announced that the block watch program is being resuscitated, after dwindling numbers of attendees led to its discontinuation last year. Shupp said the first meeting this year will be held at Borough Hall April 27 at 7pm. Regular meetings will be held the last Wednesday of the month on a bimonthly basis after that, meaning the following meeting will be held Wednesday, June 29. "Hopefully this will keep the interest of the people," Shupp said. Although he has yet to choose an officer to lead the block watch program, Shupp said he has been considering …

A new full-time Lower Saucon police officer, Robert Winters, was also sworn in at Wednesday night's township council meeting.
Wednesday night's Lower Saucon Township Council meeting was a very special one for some of the township's men in blue. Lower Saucon Police Chief Guy Lesser presented a number of the department's officers with awards for distinguished service in 2010. Lesser also oversaw the swearing in of Robert Winters as a full-time police officer, after presenting him with an award for making 11 DUI arrests. Sergeant Thomas Barndt, a 20-year department veteran, also received an award for making 19 DUI arrests, and Lesser noted that he has "been a major factor in elevating our department over the years." My disabled wife and I are very thankful to all Hellertown police officers (and Dewey Fire Co.) that have come to her aid in times of need. She couldn't continue to live at our home that she loves if not for the caring help that is always compassionately given when she gets in a "jam" and needs to be extricated. Perhaps as importantly, the responders make my wife feel that it's not a burden, but …   more ›
