Police Name Individuals Arrested at DUI Checkpoint

Hellertown Police have released the names of some of the individuals arrested at an Aug. 4-5 DUI checkpoint. The checkpoint, which was set up at Route 412 and the on-ramp to eastbound I-78, was blamed for causing a traffic jam.

In press releases issued Tuesday and Wednesday, Hellertown Police named some of the individuals arrested for DUI at a checkpoint conducted Aug. 4-5 in the 1700 block of Main Street, near the on-ramp to I-78 East. In addition to numerous arrests, the DUI checkpoint was reponsible for some controversy, as it reportedly contributed to a traffic jam between Bethlehem's Sands casino and the busy interchange. The checkpoint was conducted during the first weekend of Musikfest, and was a joint effort led by Lower Saucon Township Police. Hellertown and Freemansburg Police also participated in the effort. Juvenile Arrested for Allegedly Possessing Drug Paraphernalia in South Mountain Park On Jan. 13 at 11:34pm police say they were checking on an occupied vehicle in the South Mountain Park parking lot when they found a 17-year-old male juvenile from Allentown to be in possession of a marijuana smoking pipe. Charges of trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia have been filed against him in Northampton County Juvenile Court, police said. Police: Juvenile Stole Items from His Home and Sold Them Police say they recently arrested a 15-year-old male juvenile from the 400 block of Cherry Street after he allegedly "stole items from his residence and sold them." Police said in a press release that the juvenile was arrested following an investigation that began when officers were summoned to the home Dec. 13. A juvenile referral was filed, they added. Teen Arrested on Drug-Related Charges On Dec. 18 at 2:07am police say they arrested Anthony Felix Santiago, 18, of the 600 block of N. 16th Street, Allentown, following a traffic stop on Water Street. Police said in a press release that Santiago was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. …

State Police Announce Labor Day Weekend Arrests

Pennsylvania State Police at Bethlehem said Tuesday that troopers arrested 39 motorists for DUI over the holiday weekend.

The number of DUI arrests made over the Labor Day weekend by troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police's Bethlehem barracks rose significantly from 2010, according to a news release issued Tuesday by Troop M Bethlehem Commanding Officer Capt. William A. Teper Jr. and Public Relations Officer Trpr. First Class Marc W. Allen. In 2010, state police from Troop M arrested 25 motorists for DUI over the Labor Day weekend, whereas this year, between Sept. 2 and Sept. 5 39 motorists were arrested for DUI, the release said. The total number of citations issued to motorists also increased, from 1235 in 2010 to 1309 in 2011, and 51 motorists received citations for seat belt violations this year. Hellertown Police Officers Presented with Awards

This year's Hellertown Police Department Officer of the Year award was presented to Investigator Matthew Andree at Borough Council's May 2 meeting.

Monday night's Hellertown Borough Council meeting was a special occasion for some of the borough's men in blue and their families. Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp and Mayor Richard Fluck began the meeting with a presentation of the police department's annual officer awards, which Shupp explained were first presented last year. The awards are a way of thanking "officers who showed a true commitment to the borough of Hellertown and keeping the residents safe," Shupp said before presenting awards to a total of five officers. The first award presented was the department's Narcotics Award, which is given to any officer who makes at least 12 narcotics-related arrests during the course of a year, he said. Man Forged Checks, Stole Jewelry, Police Say
