Woman's Paper Burning 'Got Out of Control,' Police Say

Lower Saucon Township Police say Patricia McChesney, of the 2500 block of Apple Street, was issued a citation after she allegedly sparked a brush fire when burning papers.

A Lower Saucon Township woman who was burning papers on her property was cited for violating the township's open burning ordinance, according to police. In a news release, police said Patricia McChesney, of the 2500 block of Apple Street, was burning the papers when her fire "got out of control, causing a brush fire that eventually spread to and caught a garage on the property on fire." Police said the fire occurred May 2 at about 4 p.m.

Mailbox Damaged on Apple Street, Police Say

Lower Saucon Township Police say the mailbox in the 2100 block of Apple Street was found damaged after a vehicle was heard racing on the rural road.

Lower Saucon Township Police say they are investigating damage to a mailbox in the 2100 block of Apple Street as a case of criminal mischief. In a news release, police said officers responded to the location of the mailbox on March 28 at approximately 9:30am. They said neighbors described "hearing a loud vehicle racing up and down Apple Street at approximately 9pm" the evening before. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Lower Saucon Townsihp Police at 610-317-6110.

Walking Trails Could Be Built on Township Land

Lower Saucon Township Council discussed a proposal to construct walking trails and a parking area on township-owned land known as the Dravecz property near Apple Street.

Members of Lower Saucon Township's Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) and councilman Ron Horiszny have been walking a piece of township-owned land known as the Dravecz property for the purpose of planning walking trails, township manager Jack Cahalan told council March 20. Construction of the trails and a parking area would enable members of the public to visit the 72-acre property at 2388 Apple Street and enjoy it as a passive recreation area. The land was acquired by the township as part of an open space preservation initiative. At present, the property is accessible via a gravel lane off Apple Street, Cahalan said. Teen's Car 'Burst Into Flames' After Hitting Tree, Police Say

Lower Saucon Township Police say the fiery accident happened on Apple Street.

A 17-year-old boy was behind the wheel of a car that struck a tree and "burst into flames" on Apple Street Jan. 19, Lower Saucon Township Police announced in a press release late last week. Police said the accident happened in the 2500 block of Apple Street at 8:25 p.m. They added that the car only caught fire after the driver and a passenger got out of it. Authorities identified the passenger as a 14-year-old girl from Hellertown, and said she was "hospitalized for multiple injuries" following the accident. According to police, the driver was cited for careless driving, reckless driving, and failure to drive at a safe speed.

Man Admits to Attempting to Run Over Co-Worker

On April 9, William R. Ruth Jr., 54, of Fountain Hill, admitted to aggravated assault in a Lower Saucon Township case from last October.

In Northampton County Court Monday, a Fountain Hill mason admitted to twice attempting to run over a co-worker last October at a work site on Apple Street in Lower Saucon Township, the Morning Call reported. William R. Ruth Jr., 54, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the incident, which began with him throwing mortar into the road, storming off and getting into his vehicle, the article stated. Ruth then attempted to run down co-worker Ronald Gates twice, missing him by only a foot on the first attempt. It is unclear what sparked Ruth's rage, according to the story. Ruth will be sentenced by Judge Leonard Zito June 1, and could face up to 10 years in prison, the report said.

Police: 'Mere Encounter' Leads to Discovery of Heroin Needles

Lower Saucon Township police say that after an officer encountered Casey Kavitt, 44, of Moore Township, walking along Apple Street on Feb. 21, Kavitt admitted to having four used heroin needles in his possession.

A "mere encounter" between a police officer and a man walking along a dark and secluded Lower Saucon Township road will result in the filing of a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia against the man, township police said in a press release Sunday. Police said that Casey Kavitt, 44, of the 2400 block of Schlegel Road, Moore Township, was walking along Apple Street and wearing dark clothing when an officer encountered him at 9:02pm Feb. 21. Kavitt then "engaged in a conversation with the officer and kept reaching for his pocket," police said. Kavitt's behavior prompted the officer to ask him if he had anything illegal in his possession, and Kavitt responded "that he had four used needles that he uses for heroin," the press release …

Police: Mason Tried to Run Co-Worker Down

Lower Saucon Township police say William Ruth Jr. attempted to strike a co-worker with his vehicle following an argument Oct. 1.

A Fountain Hill man is behind bars following an alleged incident on Apple Street in Lower Saucon Township Saturday morning, Lower Saucon Township police announced today. According to police, William Ruth Jr. and two other men were in the 2300 block of Apple Street doing masonry work when Ruth was given "verbal direction" by one of the other men, who police identified as David Nuno. At that point, "Ruth 'flipped out' and threw a bucket and mortar pan into Apple Street, (and) then 'stormed off' to his vehicle," police said. A third worker, Ronald Gates, went into the roadway to clean up the bucket and mortar pan, and he was still there when Ruth turned from a dirt lane onto Apple Street and began driving directly at him, police said. …

Man Criticized for Taking Cans Arrested, Chief Says

On Sept. 19, Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp told Borough Council the man taking cans out of recycling bins on Detweiler Avenue had been arrested on narcotics and theft charges earlier that day.

The man whose can-taking has annoyed residents up and down Detweiler Avenue probably won't be bothering them again anytime soon, Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp announced at Borough Council's Sept. 19 meeting. Shupp said the man, who has been taking cans out of residents' recycling bins without their permission, was arrested Sept. 19 on narcotics charges "and the theft of the aluminum cans." A borough ordinance prohibits individuals from taking cans out of recycling containers placed curb-side for pick-up. Shupp explained that a resident of Detweiler Avenue alerted police when the man appeared in the morning. At that point, he said, a bicycle officer went in and arrested the man.
