On Jan. 17, Hellertown police chief Robert Shupp told Borough Council that a recent traffic accident at an unusual borough intersection has highlighted the possible need for further restrictions on parking in the area.
A recent accident at the intersection of Durham Street, Penn Street and Delaware Avenue in Hellertown has highlighted the need for a review of traffic safety in that area, police chief Robert Shupp told Borough Council Jan. 17. The intersection, which is just east of First United Church of Christ, "is not a normal intersection," Shupp explained. Unlike most local intersections it has five points of entry, and visibility at those points can be poor, Shupp said. He told council that during a visit to the intersection following the accident, he observed that he did not have a clear sight path for oncoming traffic. Shupp said that cars parked on the street were obstructing the sight path, and that he is proposing expanding a "No Parking" area …

The following alleged incidents have been reported by the Lower Saucon Police Department: Man, 18, Arrested for DUI on Route 378 On Aug. 20 at 1:40am police arrested Thomas Weidner, 18, of Catasauqua, for DUI. According to police, Weidner was stopped at a DUI checkpoint on Rt. 378 north and was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .14 percent. Weidner was also under the influence of marijuana, police said. Police and first responders were at the scene of an accident at Hickory Hill Road and Mountain Drive South late this afternoon. The accident appeared to involve a red station wagon and a van.
Police and emergency crews from Hellertown and Lower Saucon were on the scene of an apparent car accident at the intersection of Hickory Hill Road/Friedensville Road and Bingen Road/Mountain Drive South in Lower Saucon Township late this afternoon. At approximately 5:30pm, Se-Wy-Co fire trucks were observed at the scene of the accident, as were tow trucks from Saucon Collision. The accident appeared to have involved an older model red station wagon and a work van. Hellertown police were helping to direct traffic through the busy intersection, which straddles the border of Lower Saucon Township and the City of Bethlehem. A Lower Saucon Township man was reaching for his cell phone when he lost control of his pickup truck, which jumped the curb on East Third Street near Adams Street in Bethlehem and caused mayhem, property damage and injuries to one man, according to the Express-Times. Richard Degnan, 30, was identified as the driver by Bethlehem police, who are still investigating the accident, which occurred at 8:10am Wednesday. Charges will likely be filed, according to Capt. David Kravatz. Degnan’s truck reportedly knocked down a light pole and sent a metal garbage can flying, striking John Saraceno, owner of nearby Saraceno Design, who suffered cuts and bruises. A man from Hellertown was killed early Sunday when he lost control of his SUV, struck a guide rail and went down an embankment along the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, according to a story published on The Morning Call. After going down the embankment, the vehicle reportedly struck a utility pole and ended up on its side. State police believe heavy rain was responsible for the crash that killed Jason Dahms, according to both the Morning Call report and a story published by WNEP. Dahms' death is reportedly one of at least three in the area that have so far been attributed to Hurricane Irene, which lashed the region over the weekend.
