Steel City Volunteer Fire Company was founded in 1958 to help protect the village of Steel City, which is geographically isolated from the rest of the township because of its location between the Lehigh River and an adjacent mountain. The fire company is identifiable as Northampton County Station 63. Steel City Volunteer Fire Company firefighters collaborate closely with their volunteer colleagues from Se-Wy-Co, Southeastern and Leithsville, in Lower Saucon; and Dewey Fire Company No. 1, in Hellertown. In addition to fire protection, Steel City Volunteer Fire Company also provides vehicle rescue services and water rescue services.

Founded in 1898, Dewey Fire Company No. 1 is an all-volunteer fire company located in Hellertown. Dewey remainsMore Hellertown's only fire company, although mutual aid agreements exist with Lower Saucon Township's four volunteer companies--Southeastern, Steel City, Leithsville and Se-Wy-Co--with whom Dewey members work closely.

Dewey's main purpose remains protecting the lives of borough residents whenever fire breaks out. Dewey is led by Hellertown Fire Chief Rick Delmore. The company's Assistant Chief is Matt Andree. A small museum featuring displays related to the history of firefighting in Hellertown is housed in the fire company's headquarters on Durham Street.
