Founded in 1898, Dewey Fire Company No. 1 is an all-volunteer fire company located in Hellertown. Dewey remainsMore Hellertown's only fire company, although mutual aid agreements exist with Lower Saucon Township's four volunteer companies--Southeastern, Steel City, Leithsville and Se-Wy-Co--with whom Dewey members work closely.

Dewey's main purpose remains protecting the lives of borough residents whenever fire breaks out. Dewey is led by Hellertown Fire Chief Rick Delmore. The company's Assistant Chief is Matt Andree. A small museum featuring displays related to the history of firefighting in Hellertown is housed in the fire company's headquarters on Durham Street.

The Hellertown Area Library was founded in 1989 by residents who believed that a borough library would be a wonderfulMore educational and civic resource. In the fall of 1989, this grassroots group started a "good books collection," which quickly evolved into the library organization.

The library was first located at 528 Main St., before the current building on Constitution Ave. was constructed and dedicated in 1993. The library's collection has grown to include more than 33,000 books and materials, including DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, and various other items.

Borough residents over the age of five may obtain a Hellertown Area Library card with proper identification, and the library's materials are available to non-borough residents if they have an ACCESS (Pa. state) library membership.

Saucon Valley Compost Center

The Saucon Valley Compost Center is open to residents of Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township. Items which may beMore dropped off include leaves, hedge trimmings, Christmas trees (in season) and small bushes. The center is open Friday and Saturday from 9am to 1pm, from mid-April through late November. In 2012, the center will be open from April 13 through Nov. 24. The Borough of Hellertown government offices -- including police, zoning and public works -- are housed in anMore historic stone building once the home of Dr. Henry Detwiller. Detwiller, for whom the plaza adjacent to Borough Hall is named, built his home in 1818 and willed it to his son Dr. William Detwiller. The two-story structure later became the Central Hotel before it was purchased by the borough for municipal use in 1939.

A 1997 addition to the building houses meeting space, council chambers and additional office space for the Borough Manager and staff. The Borough of Hellertown was incorporated in 1872 and has 5,606 residents according to the 2000 U.S. census.
