Where Does the Word "Saucon" Come From?

The word "Saucon" is as ubiquitous throughout the Hellertown area today as fish are in the trophy-designated Saucon Creek. But where does the word come from?

Like many names of local municipalities and waterways, the word "Saucon" is a derivation of a Native American word. Among the tribes who for centuries dwelt in what is today referred to as the Saucon Valley, "Sakunk" meant "at the mouth of the creek."
