Light Up Night, Golden Brooms, SV Lions Breakfast, Small Business Saturday

Here's a guide to some of what's happening in the Saucon Valley area this week. Other highlights include a special event at Gr8soundz record store in Hellertown and the Lower Saucon Township Historical Society's Holiday Open House.

Friday, Nov. 29

Saucon Valley Compost Center CLOSED

4:30 p.m., the Hellertown Business Revitalization Program committee and Mayor Richard Fluck will present YogaMos owners Stephanie and Chris MoDavis with the HBRP's first "Golden Broom" award, for their business's outstanding appearance and contribution to the attractiveness of downtown Hellertown's streetscape, 410 Main St., Hellertown

6 p.m., Light Up Night, presented by the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce, Detwiller Plaza and Hellertown Borough Hall, 685 Main St., Hellertown. Celebrate the start of the holiday season with cookies and hot chocolate, live music, the lighting of the borough's holiday displays and Santa's arrival. Photos with Santa will begin after 7 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 30

Small Business Saturday - Various Saucon Valley businesses—such as Frey's Better Foods and Doggy Dao & Cat's Meow—will host special events in observance of Small Business Saturday, which has been set aside to celebrate the contributions of independently-owned businesses to local economies. Some of the other local businesses expected to participate in this expanding event include Saucon Valley Bikes, Lost River Caverns, DiMaio's Family Restaurant, Klassic Gold, Premier Urgent Care and NVS fx Salon.

10 a.m., Kraussdale Alpacas 11th Annual Open Farm, 5169 Kraussdale Road, East Greenville. Visit Kraussdale Alpacas to see and learn about these wonderful animals. Shop for soft, warm alpaca yarn, socks, sweaters and
more. See spinning demonstrations and enjoy hot apple cider and

1 to 3 p.m., Lower Saucon Township Historical Society's Holiday Open House at the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse, 4216 Countryside Lane, Hellertown. Children will have the opportunity to make a pine cone bird feeder and ornaments to take home. Holiday music will be provided by Rosemarie Kovacs and light refreshments will be served. Tours of the schoolhouse will be provided.

2 to 4 p.m., Meet and Greet with Mike Portnoy and Eddie Trunk, Gr8soundz record store, 1055 Main St., Hellertown. Portnoy is a drummer primarily known as the drummer of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He has won 26 awards from Modern Drummer magazine and is now the drummer for the Winery Dogs. Trunk, the host of VH1 Classics' 'That Metal Show,' will be selling and signing his newest book, 'Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Volume 2.'

Sunday, Dec. 1

8 a.m., Saucon Valley Lions Breakfast, Se-Wy-Co banquet hall, 3621 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bethlehem. Full breakfast menu and table service. Enjoy eggs, omelets, pancakes, French toast, creamed chipped beef and hash browned potatoes. Meat choices: bacon, ham and sausage. The December special is a "Christmas omelet" (bacon or ham or sausage and cheese topped with tomatoes and peppers). Bring a non-perishable food item to donate and receive 50 cents off.
