Apple Festival, Park Opening, Registration for Cabbage Fest

Highlights of this weekend will be a ribbon-cutting at Lower Saucon Township's new Kingston Park, the annual Apple Festival at the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse, and registration for the Saucon Valley Farmers' Market's Cabbage Recipe Contest.

Saturday, Oct. 5

9:30 a.m., Kingston Park opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting with Lower Saucon Township officials and Dr. Kingston, 4216 Countryside Lane, Hellertown. Ella Mary Ringhoffer Kingston, after whom the new park is named, attended the adjacent Lutz-Franklin School from 1933 to 1940.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain or shine), Lower Saucon Township Historical Society's annual Apple Festival, Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse, 4216 Countryside Lane, Hellertown. Enjoy apple treats, apple tastings, apple crafts and an apple dessert contest. John Samuels and The Dave Mell Dual will provide musical entertainment throughout the day. Children will be able to meet Johnny Appleseed, build a birdhouse, and (from 11 a.m. to noon) listen to apple stories with the Hellertown Area Library staff. Also, at 2 p.m., an American Birch will be planted in the schoolyard to honor Karen and John Samuels. Karen was president of the LSTHS during the restoration of the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse.

Sunday, Oct. 6

9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saucon Valley Farmers' Market, Water Street Park, Hellertown. It will be the last day to register for the market's 2nd Annual Cabbage Recipe Contest on Oct. 13. More details are available on the SVFM website.
