Sign-Ups for 2013 Spirit Parade 'Extremely Low,' Organizer Says

Participants are needed for the 2013 Saucon Valley Spirit Parade, organizers say.

Saucon Valley Spirit Parade chairman Dave Heintzelman said Wednesday that people and groups planning to march or ride in the Sunday, Oct. 20 parade should register as soon as possible.

"Participation in this year’s parade is extremely low," he said in an email.

This year's parade will be held in Hellertown, beginning at 2 p.m., and will be combined with the 4-County Firemen's Parade featuring trucks and equipment from throughout Northampton, Lehigh, Monroe and Carbon counties.

The 2013 parade theme, fittingly, is "Honoring First Responders."

Lineup for the parade will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Walnut Street near the Saucon Valley School District campus.

According to information shared by Heintzelman, traffic on Main Street in downtown Hellertown will be detoured starting at 1:30 p.m.

Because of the additional vehicles and groups that will be participating this year, residents who plan to attend the parade are being encouraged to plan ahead and travel to the area before streets are closed.

Everyone who plans to march in the parade must complete and submit a registration form/waiver in advance.

Forms should be submitted to Saucon Valley Spirit Parade c/o David Heintzelman, 326 Main St., Hellertown, PA 18055. For further information, or a registration form, call 610-838-0521.

This year's parade route will be the same as last year's, marching in a loop from Walnut Street to Main Street to Water Street to Rentzheimer Drive to Durham Street to Constitution Avenue to Walnut Street.

Categories of participation include: individual, band, groups, floats and theme.

Carpooling to the lineup area is being encouraged to help reduce the potential for congestion in the area.

An entire "Spirit Weekend" filled with family-friendly events is being planned around this year's parades.

More information about the Spirit Weekend activities—which will include fireworks, a concert and a 5K race—is posted on the Saucon Valley Spirit website.
