Lots of Local Events on Tap for This Weekend

Saucon Valley History Day, a native plant sale, the Hellertown Historical Society Yard Sale, Monte Carlo Night, a fishing tournament, a reception for a new art exhibit at the Heller Homestead, and a H-LS Chamber of Commerce event are all planned.

A cornucopia of events are planned in the Saucon Valley this weekend, which means nobody gets to say, "I'm bored!"

On Saturday, will celebrate the unique heritage of Lower Saucon Township and Hellertown, and a Chamber of Commerce event on the --called Pathway to Progress--will celebrate the contributions of local businesses and offer a glimpse of what's in store for visitors to the Saucon Valley Farmers' Market this season.

At the Wagner Grist Mill, the 6th annual will benefit the . And bargain-hunters will want to peruse the items for sale at the Hellertown Historical Society's yard sale.

Lastly, on Sunday, April 29 a Mini Vendor Fair to benefit the 2012 Philadelphia Vision Walk will be held at at 11am.

Here's a rundown of what's happening Saturday:

  • Saucon Valley History Day: From 9am to 2pm Saturday, April 28 (rain or shine), visitors will be welcomed at the (Saucon Valley Conservancy), the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse Museum (Lower Saucon Township Historical Society) and the Wagner Grist Mill (Hellertown Historical Society). Activities at the homestead will include a Civil War Encampment with living history demonstrations by Historical Impressions of America; a craft show and native plant sale; "A Journey Through Time" tours of the furnished Heller House and Widow's House ; and ; and a Tricky Tray. Activities at the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse will include tours of the restored one-room school, quilting and spinning demonstrations, bluebird house-building, cake walks and peanut/candy scrambles, kids' games, antique displays and live music. Activities at the Hellertown Historical Society (Wagner Grist Mill) will include tours of the historic property, including the barn across the street; a yard sale; and a bake sale. Refreshments will be sold at all three venues. The antiques and consignment shop at the Heller Homestead will also be open.
  • Pathway to Progress: Local businesses and groups will offer information to visitors in Hellertown's , near the Saucon Rail Trail, from 9am to 2pm. will offer free bike rentals on a first come, first served basis. Other businesses will hand out information and goodies. Among the businesses expected to be on hand for the event are , , , , and . Baked goods, flowers and plants will be be sold by other businesses in anticipation of the opening of the on Sunday, May 6. Visitors will get a sneak peek of what's coming up courtesy of The Garden of Easton/Blue Mountain Farms, , Tomblers Home Bakery and Rolling Pin Pastries. Two of the participating sites in Saucon Valley History Day (see above)--the Wagner Grist Mill (Hellertown Historical Society) and the Heller Homestead are readily accessible from Water Street Park and the Saucon Rail Trail.
  • 6th annual Phyllis Schnaible-George Klotz Fishing Tournament: The tournament, which will be held at the grist mill ponds on West Walnut Street on Saturday (youth) and Sunday (adult), from 8am to 2pm, is sponsored by the Saucon Valley Community Center. Even if you're not competing, it's fun to come down and see what everyone's catching! Adjacent to the ponds is the Wagner Grist Mill, where tours will be offered in conjunction with Saucon Valley History Day. A yard sale sponsored by the Hellertown Historical Society will also be held.

Saucon Valley Conservancy volunteers are also seeking information about what became of a frame barn that once stood next to the stone barn (now in ruins) at the Heller Homestead. Anyone with information about the barn--which appears in photos from the 1940s--is asked to stop by and share that.
