Local Resident Plans Fundraiser for Four-Legged Friends

Amy Musser, the owner of Scrapbooking's Inn in Hellertown, is sponsoring an Aug. 28 fundraiser called "Crafting for Paws" to help raise money for the Center for Animal Health and Welfare.

“I always wanted to help, but I was one of those people that when I walk into an animal shelter or pet store, I would cry because I was too emotionally attached to them and I couldn’t take them all home,” admitted local resident Amy Musser, owner of the Hellertown scrapbooking business .

On Aug. 28, Musser will be hosting a fundraiser event called “Crafting for Paws” at Christ Church UCC in Bethlehem. The event will benefit the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, a busy shelter in Williams Township that was formerly the Northampton County SPCA.

A life-long animal-lover, Musser said she first decided to hold a scrapbooking fundraiser to benefit the shelter three years ago, as it costs about $750,000 a year to care for the thousands of cats and dogs that are temporarily housed there.

“For me, it’s getting people to realize that the facility saves as many animals as they possibly can, adopts out as many animals as they possibly can, and their vet costs alone are immense,“ she explained.

"Crafting for Paws" will be held from 1-9pm and include activities such as a bake sale, a silent auction, a yard sale and a vendor fair.

Some of the vendors who will be participating include Premier Jewelry, Miche Bags, Tastefully Simple, UR FOTO HERE, Stampin Up!, The K9 Caterer, Avon, Close to My Heart, Dove Chocolate and Tracy Bodeo Photography. There will also be an opportunity to participate in an all-day scrapbooking session for $30. The cost of the session includes a share table, snacks, beverages and dinner.

“People are going to bring their (scrapbooking) stuff in," Musser said. "Say they have extra stickers or paper they don’t want. They’ll be able to grab from that for free."

“We are looking for scrapbookers because that’s going to be our main income,” she added.

Along with monetary donations, the event will be accepting donations of pet supplies, including linens, cat litter, pet food and the like.

For those who might be wondering if there is anything they can take home from the event, there will also be six to 10 cats up for adoption.

“The animals are going to be there from 1-3,” Musser said. “We don’t want the cats to be stuck in cages for too long."

She added that the cats that will be adoptable at the event are currently in the process of being hand-selected.

"We’re going to bring one of each color breed," she said. "We’re going to bring our favorites!”

Anyone interested in adopting a cat the day of the event will be able to do so by filling out an application. All of the cats will have been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and have microchips for tracking. The cost to adopt a feline at the event will be $25, or half of what it would normally be at the shelter.

“If you’re not really an animal lover, come scrapbook and if you’re not a scrapbooker, come love animals,” recommended an enthusiastic Musser.

“Crafting for Paws” will be held Aug. 28 at Christ Church UCC, 75 E. Market St., Bethlehem, from 1 to 9pm.
