Gas Prices Suddenly Up 10 Cents a Gallon? Why?

Gas prices have been high lately, but why the recent steep spike?

Though gas prices have been on the rise due to global concerns, you may have noticed a really steep spike Tuesday--as much as 8 to 10 cents a gallon.

According to a story in the Christian Science Monitor, oil refineries in the Gulf of Mexico are taking precautionary measures and are shutting down for safety reasons.

Prices will go even higher as the downtime extends, the story says.

And the price hike comes just in time for the Labor Day weekend.

According to AllentownGasPrices.com, as of Wednesday a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was averaging about $3.75 per gallon in the Allentown area, which is about 25 cents more per gallon than the average price of a year ago.
