Superintendent Shares District Goals for 2011-2012

Saucon Valley elementary, middle and high school principals also explained their goals for the upcoming year at the school board's Aug. 23 meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Sandra Fellin presented the school board with the first draft of the district’s goals for the 2011-2012 school year at the board's Aug. 23 meeting.

Fellin also shared goals for herself with the board. She will be researching and recommending student options with regard to course work credits and programs by partnering with other school districts.

She said she wants to form student liaison groups to gain student suggestions and perspectives. Fellin said she feels students may not feel comfortable reporting their opinions to their school principals.

School board member Lanita Lum agreed with Fellin, and also asked that students from different grade levels be a part of the groups.

For the , goals include monitoring the new schedule, analyzing PSSA math scores and working to improve student performance, researching and recommending the credit recovery process and establishing a process to address expectations for at-risk students’ success.

Principal Eric Kahler said he and vice principal Lorie Gamble will look at individual students’ needs and provide solutions without disrupting daily classroom activities.

Gamble will also review and evaluate the effectiveness of the summer learning academy and begin the process of implementing positive behavior practices. Gamble said she wants teachers to be able to handle more disciplinary actions within the classroom and make students more accountable for their actions.

The goals include monitoring the secondary Response to Intervention model and implementing a Scholastic reading and math inventory.

Middle school principal Pamela Bernardo said she will recognize and increase positive student interaction. Vice principal Thomas Halcisak will increase the effective use of teacher web pages by providing more information about curriculum.

The goals include refining the Response to Intervention implementation, increasing the use of web pages to improve communication and reducing the amount of paper used. The two principals will also focus on developing “differentiated instructional practices to address all students in the classroom.”
