Spring Concert Season Has Arrived in the Saucon Valley

Students from Saucon Valley School District make their final preparations for the spring concert season.

The flowers are blooming, birds are singing and the Saucon Valley elementary and middle school spring concerts are about to begin. This is an exciting time for students, and one for which they have worked hard all year.

For many the concerts will also be swan songs of sorts, as they prepare to move up from elementary to middle school or middle school to high school. The Middle School Chorus Concert will be especially memorable, as students say goodbye to .

The spring concert season officially begins tonight, May 11, with the Saucon Valley Middle School Jazz Band and Saucon Valley Elementary School Band Concert. Students will perform under the direction of Albert Neumeyer and Kevin O‘Connell, and the concert begins at 7pm in the high school auditorium.

During the concert, students selected to participate in the PMEA District 10 Intermediate Band will be honored. These students include eighth-graders Isabel Sefton, bass clarinet; Nicole Payung, baritone horn; and Richard Weddigen, mallets. Seventh-graders Kenneth Honer, who plays French horn, and Annika Sundlof, who plays oboe, will also be honored.

On Thursday, May 19, the musical celebrations will continue with the Middle School Chorus's performance under the direction of Annelle Conover.

Prior to their concert, chorus students will participate in a special workshop with composer and conductor Dr. David Giardiniere, she said in an email.

"He will be working with us on his selection 'Chili Caliente' and will attend the concert as a guest conductor conducting the choir," she said. "It’s going to be quite exciting! We will also be singing a selection called 'Printemps' which was composed especially for us by Michael Steven Schmidt."

Schmidt is a Saucon Valley graduate as well as the son of middle school secretary Brenda Schmidt, and currently teaches in New Jersey, she added.

The spring concert season will conclude with two elementary performances.

On Wednesday, May 25, the Elementary Chorus under the direction of Karen Carolan will perform at 7 pm in the high school auditorium. The following evening, the Panther Players will perform a program at 7pm in the Elementary School.

The spring concerts are a wonderful way for our students to showcase their talents and entertain their families and friends with an evening of music. So mark your calendars, come out and support the children, relax and enjoy the musical entertainment!
