Some School Bus Drivers are Speeding in Hellertown [Letter]

Hellertown resident Lee Weidner says he has observed school buses traveling at 45 mph on Main Street in the borough, where the posted speed limit is 30 mph.

To the editor:

Call me a whistleblower, but Saucon Valley School District buses need to abide by posted speed limits in Hellertown. The drivers are not exempt from the rule of law, even though some think they are.

Transparency is today's watchword, mostly heard in government. It is ironic that elected officials use it to cover up their corrupt deeds. Recently a chief IRS official covered herself by pleading the Fifth. This is the opposite of transparency, in my opinion.

How can a Saucon Valley School District driver drive by Thomas Avenue on Main Street (in Hellertown) at 45 mph? I am not the only witness of this daily occurrence. I am simply asking why this happens, and how do others not report the offense?

Transparency needs to occur in the SVSD transportation area. Since many citizens don't want to get involved, those who do not fear getting involved need to comment on this issue. If there are no comments, then this is a non-issue and I am wrong in my observation. Since I have been driving (1961), it is clear to me that a vehicle moving at 30 mph is far different than one moving at 45 mph. School bus drivers need to be accountable and responsible, not just on Walnut Street but also on Main Street, Hellertown.

Saucon Valley School District officials can either observe and comment or plead the Fifth and say nothing.
