Senior Spotlight: Christina Calvo

Saucon Valley senior Christina Calvo served as the lacrosse team's "attack captain." First-year Head Coach Jane Hoff says "she will be greatly missed."

senior Christina Calvo had never played a competitive sport until she began playing attack for the Lady Panther varsity lacrosse team as a ninth-grader. To improve her LAX skills she also participated in Kutztown University's sport camp last summer.

"I am pretty sure I had four goals this year," Christina said recently.

"Our team is like one big family," she explained. "We use the phrase ohana because it means 'family' in Hawaiian. We have grown super close this year because of our coaches. We go out and do things together like going to Wing Night at Starters Pub. We are just a really positive team."

First-year Head Coach Jane Hoff said "Christina Calvo has been a tremendous asset to the team."

"She is a leader not only on the field, but off the field as well," Hoff said. "Her knowledge of lacrosse and her manner of relaying information has developed her into an incredible role model for the younger girls on the team. They look to Christina to guide them on the field and help direct them during fast breaks and designed plays."

Christina admitted that not winning a game during her first three years on a team that lost 52 straight contests was extremely disappointing, however this year playing for three supportive new coaches and winning four games were career highlights for her.

Christina is involved with Mock Trial and Debate, and lists biology as a favorite subject. She will enroll at Bloomsburg University in the fall.

Christina said she likes Cuban cuisine, teaches a Sunday school class of two-year-olds at First Presbyterian Church and works part-time as a server/hostess at Starters Pub.

She has an older brother, Jose IV, and is the daughter of Jose III and Maureen Calvo. Her parents have always been supportive of her efforts, she said, and her coaches have impressed upon her how important it is "to stay up and be positive!"
