"Aida: The Timeless Love Story (School Edition)," featuring music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, will be performed at Saucon Valley High School March 1-3 at 7:30pm and March 3-4 at 2pm.

The  stage will come alive with music this week, as the curtain opens on the school's production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Tony Award-winning rock musical "Aida." Based upon Verdi’s opera of the same name, the musical version of "Aida" (pronounced Ay-EE-da) won four Tony awards after it premiered on Broadway in 2000.

The musical opens in the Egyptian exhibit hall of a modern-day museum, but audiences will be transported back in time to ancient Egypt, where a tale of forbidden love will unfold before their eyes.

Set to the music of Elton John and featuring lyrics by Tim Rice, the original Broadway production of "Aida" starred Heather Hadley--who won a Tony Award for her performance--as the Nubian princess Aida. Adam Pascal (of "Rent" fame) played Egyptian army captain Radames, who becomes captivated with Aida after her capture by his men.

Saucon Valley’s production will feature high-tech lighting and a rock band performing its award-winning score. The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack’s musical numbers vary from those with traditional African influences to reggae, gospel and pop songs. To preview the music that students will perform, you can listen to samples on the iTunes website.
