Report: Strike Not Planned for First Day of School

Despite rumors to the contrary, Saucon Valley teachers say they do not plan to walk off the job on Aug. 27.

Parents of school-age children in the should be able to breathe a little easier, in light of a Morning Call article published Aug. 3.

According to the article, which cites union and school district sources, teachers are not planning to strike on the first day of classes--Aug. 27--in spite of rumors to the contrary that have recently circulated in the community.

Negotiations between the Saucon Valley School Board and the union are ongoing, contract offers have been exchanged, and another round of talks is scheduled for Aug. 13, the story indicates.

The Saucon Valley teachers' most recent contract expired June 30, and the district is asking them to accept a pay freeze in 2012-2013.

There is a recent history of labor-related acrimony in the Saucon Valley School District, with teachers having struck three times in the last seven years--in 2005, 2008, and most recently in 2009.

Schools were shuttered for nearly two weeks by the 2009 strike, which was ultimately resolved through binding arbitration.
