Lower Saucon Needs Junior Council Members

Lower Saucon Township is seeking applicants for its Junior Councilperson Program, according to an announcement posted on the township's website.

The program provides an opportunity for the high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to participate in the government process in Lower Saucon.

"The Junior Council Person acts as a link between the youth of the community and the governing body by providing information from their perspective, and will, in turn, gain an understanding and be able to explain to their peers what municipal government is all about," the announcement said.

Junior council members who are juniors and seniors can serve on the following governmental bodies:

  • Township Council (1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month - 7 p.m.)
  • Township Planning Commission (3rd Thursday of each month - 7 p.m.)
  • Township Environmental Advisory Council (2nd Tuesday of each month - 7 p.m.)
  • Township Park & Recreation Board (1st Monday of each month - 7 p.m.)  
Junior council members who are sophomores can serve on the following:
  • Township Planning Commission (3rd Thursday of each month - 7 p.m.)
  • Township Environmental Advisory Council (2nd Tuesday of each month - 7 p.m.)
  • Township Park & Recreation Board (1st Monday of each month - 7 p.m.)
Requirements for applicants:
  • Must be a resident of Lower Saucon Township
  • Must be a sophomore (10th grade), junior (11th grade) or senior (12th grade)
  • Must be willing to serve a one (1) year term to coincide with the duration of the school year
  • Must take an oath of office
  • Should be able to attend all meetings of the council, board or commission they are appointed to, including budget and special meetings
  • Must submit a written statement of interest in being appointed as Junior Councilperson to the Township Manager
  • Applicant is not permitted to vote
  • Applicant is not permitted to attend “executive sessions” of the township council
  • Applicant must observe township council meeting rules and will be permitted to ask questions, provide comments and make reports
