Local Resident's Company Sponsoring Scholarship Competition

A local resident's company has announced that it will sponsor a vocal scholarship competition for high school students at the Allentown Brew Works on Thursday, June 7 at 8pm.

Star of the Day Event Productions, which was begun by Hellertown resident Kirsten Rani Almeida last year, "is a full-scale live entertainment company whose mission is to entertain, educate and encourage community enrichment through music, theater and dance," according to a press release about the competition.

Almeida said she started Star of the Day Event Productions after she organized a benefit concert for the victims of the at the former Starfish Brasserie restaurant in Bethlehem.

The success of that event led her to start the small entertainment group, and since then Star of the Day has held a benefit concert for the , held a book drive to support early literacy in poor communities, and teamed up with to raise money for victims of domestic abuse.

The June 7 vocal scholarship competition will feature performances by high school juniors and seniors from throughout the Lehigh Valley, according to the press release.

Judging will be by opera, Broadway and film industry professionals, and students will have the opportunity to perform with Broadway actor Bart Shatto (Les Miserables, Civil War, Dracula) at the competition.

The top scoring junior and senior will each receive a cash prize, along with more than $200 in assorted prizes.
