Initial 2014-2015 SVSD Budget Includes $450,000 Deficit

The district is dealing with rising costs associated with teacher pension requirements from the state and workmen's compensation and insurance costs.

A preliminary $41.6 million school district budget discussed by the Saucon Valley School Board Tuesday includes a $450,000 deficit that could ultimately be balanced by a 1.57 percent tax increase, program and/or staff cuts, a transfer of money from savings, or a combination of those options, the Express-Times reported.

The district is dealing with rising costs associated with teacher pension requirements from the state and workmen's compensation and insurance costs, the newspaper reported.

The school board has until June to approve a final budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, and the numbers discussed Tuesday are likely to change before then.

Saucon Valley has avoided passage of a budget with a property tax hike for the past five years.

The school board also approved retroactive three percent raises for a number of district employees and administrators at its meeting Tuesday.

The next Saucon Valley School Board meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in the high school Audion room. Meetings are also live-streamed and the videos remain posted on YouTube.

The links to watch both live and past meetings are available on the School Board Agendas page on the school district website.
