Fundraiser Held for Cancer Patient Angel Mojica

The 14-year-old Saucon Valley student has been battling a form of leukemia, and is need of a bone marrow transplant.

"No one fights alone" has been the theme in the Saucon Valley ever since family and friends first heard about 14-year-old Hellertown resident battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, the community rallied to help the Mojica family once again, this time with a . Organizers Brooke Kramer and Cheryl Salgado worked tirelessly to pull off a successful event.

For Kramer, organizing the bake sale was the right thing to do for her friend, she explained.

“Angel and I have been friends for the last two years,” she said. “He has always been by my side. This fundraiser is my way to give back to him.”

Salgado said she helped Kramer organize the event, “because Brooke asked me to, and (because) no one fights alone.”

Kramer had the initial idea for the bake sale fundraiser, and after she shared it with Salgado, event planning began.

Salgado’s sister, Julie Werkheiser, was able to secure the use of for the event, and a team of family members and volunteers solicited donations of food and raffle items.

The Facebook page they set up for the event, "Fundraiser for Angel Mojica," became a huge help, as people went to it for both information and motivation to do more for the family.

Christ Lutheran Church was a busy place on Saturday, with tables filled with baked goods for sale, vendors selling products (with many donating a percentage of sales to the fund), and a Miller-Keystone Blood Drive simultaneously under way. Werkheiser, who volunteered at the event, spent her morning donating platelets, which are often used to help treat cancer patients like Angel.

Angel’s dad, Jose Mojica, was around all day providing updates on his son.

According to Jose, in September Angel is hoping to head to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., for a new procedure.  Jose explained that from 2002 to 2007, St. Jude reported a 65 percent survival rate among its patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Angel will be scheduled for a in October, pending a successful bone marrow donor match.

Meanwhile, all proceeds from the bake sale will go to Angel and his family to help with medical expenses.

Organizers of the event wished to thank all who donated food, raffle items and their time to help make the day a huge success. The local businesses that donated items to the fundraiser included , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , A Furry Tail Come True and .

The family is currently working on planning another fundraiser to be held at the Camden Aquarium in Camden, N.J. in late August or early September. More details will be announced once they are finalized.
