District Recognizes Community Members for Volunteer Work

On June 26, the Saucon Valley School Board extended thanks to Saucon Valley Elementary PTO members and other community volunteers.

Several individuals received certificates of appreciation from the at the June 26 school board meeting.

Principal Ro Frey presented certificates to the Saucon Valley Elementary Parent Teacher Organization for all of their fundraising efforts this year.

“We have a wonderful school because of you,” Frey told PTO representatives.

The PTO raised money that enabled elementary school students to participate in after-school programs and workshops. In addition, the PTO raised enough money for the district to purchase five SMART classrooms—classrooms that allow teachers to use various technologies to teach their students.

PTO officers include co-presidents Julia Burfeind and Lee Ferguson, co-vice presidents Trinette Hernandez and Gretta Torres, and Andy Lee Page.

In addition to the PTO, Frey thanked residents Carol Schneider, Al Schneider and MaryAlice Harka for organizing and managing the annual elementary book fair, which raised $8,892 for the school library.

Business owner Joshua Malik, of Joshua Tree Residential & Commercial Tree Care, was thanked for volunteering his tree care “team” and their time to work at the elementary school’s annual courtyard cleanup.

Two students were also recognized at the meeting for winning the Hellertown American Legion’s annual essay contest.

Siblings Brynne and Brett Szabo were congratulated for their winning essays.

Brynne, a fourth grade student, won for her essay entitled, “What it means to be an American.” Brett, a ninth grade student, won for his essay “How I can show my patriotism in my community.”

School board member Lanita Lum told the students she was impressed with their patriotism, especially at such young ages.

The next Saucon Valley School Board meeting will be held at 7pm July 24. There will be no meeting July 10.
