The Class of 2012 was one of the largest in recent memory--a fact highlighted by valedictorian in his address at Commencement Exercises on Friday, June 15.
"Remember how we were always the largest, loudest class at Saucon Valley?" Powell asked his classmates.
He went on to remind them of how fortunate they have been.
"We are all blessed," Powell said, before personally thanking his family, friends and God for the opportunities he has enjoyed.
"I know that if we all strive to exceed expectations to achieve our potential, we can," he added.
Salutatorian Emma Schanzenbach told her fellow graduates that above all else she wishes them happiness in the future.
"This will lead you to say the words that Julius Caesar said over 2,000 years ago," she said. "'Veni, vidi, vici.'"
Translated, the famous quote by Caesar means "I came, I saw, I conquered."
Schanzenbach also encouraged her peers "to stand tall and be proud of our alma mater."
Senior Class President Susanne Neher spoke of heroes, and said that each student with whom she shared the stage was a hero to her.
"Each hero has encountered tests, allies and enemies," she said.
Neher said that in going forward in life, many more challenges await the Class of 2012.
The exciting thing about life, she noted, is that "you never know when another quest is about to begin."
Other highlights of the commencement exercises included remarks by high school principal Eric Kahler and school district superintendent Dr. Sandra Fellin, as well as a musical performance of U2's "Beautiful Day" which was directed by Dennis Smith, the school's retiring Choral Director.
